    I think that's a pretty extravagant present. I'd check with his mother, she may have no idea how much it's worth

    OT: Yes all phones have an IMEI (equipment identification number) and the SIM has an IMSI which is the subscriber identification.

    Everytime you make a mobile call (on telstras network at least) it can check your sim against the handset and record it, so it knows when you change sim cards between phones etc.

    Maybe the family was regifting it to your son. They might have got the phone free on a 2 for 1 deal or something???

    I think it is a bit strange, even at $49 that is way to much to spend on a friends birthday present at 13. I dont think i would be comfortable with my child getting one as a present. I would feel a little uncomfortable when his birthday came along.
