I think there is a formula called Neocate which you can get on prescription???
Hi
I finally got my daughter in to see a allergy specialist (Dr Heyworth-Smith) and my DD came up with a mild reaction to milk.
I suspected this was true because when I gave her yogurt, cheese, she has a hives all over her face and I haven't done this for over 3 months now!
I have tried a variety of fomulas (soy and HA as advised by dr) and had no success with her taking it (tried bottles, sippy cups, straw cups) to no avail!
However I have limited success with Rice Milk or Oat Milk. I add flax seed oil to her cup (Francesca Naish recommends this in her book) and calcium powder she seems to drink a little of this ! She is still BF twice a day!
OK so that is the long story, but my question is this should I keep trying with formulas (and does anyone have a good one that works for their milk allergy bub as I tried all of the soy based ones and she turns her nose up) or carry on with Rice Milk that may cause malnourishment????????
(ps. I want to wean my bub at 12 months she is 10 and half months now)

Hi,
I weaned both my bubs off formula at about 11 months onto cows milk.
If you really can't get any formula which agrees with DD then swap to Lactose free cows milk.
Just a suggestion.
Hi Bigbubbabelly
My DS was diagnosed with Lactose Intolerance at about 18 months after a severe bout of gastro for which he was hospitalised. After trying every variation of soy and rice milk etc, I eventually tried goat's milk. I have no idea why this doesn't have the same effect as cow's milk, but it worked for me, and DS loved it. He was however a bit older, so I am not sure if this would provide enough nutrition at 10 and a half months, and his was not actually an allergy as such, his body just couldn't cope with digesting the lactose. But it may be worth asking your doc about?
Good Luck.
Hi BigBubbaBelly,
My son had an anaphylactic reaction to a cows milk based formula at 8 months of age and his allergy to milk (also egg & peanuts) was confirmed at 11 months. At the time he was breastfeed and I too was wanting to wean him in preparation for my return to part time work.
In the early days he was not keen on Soy based formulas but something that worked for us was to add a little vanilla flavoured soy milk to the prepared formula. From memory we started with a 3:1 mix and then slowly reduced this so that he was having straight formula. He is now 22 months and is still having 200mls at nights (his doctors suggested we keep him on the formula for as long as he will take it).
Hope this helps!
:yeahthat:
My DS is allergic to the cows milk protein (as am I), so lactose free products are absolutely no different for him, he will still have the same reaction. Lactose intolerance and cows milk allergy are two completely different things.
Bigbubbabelly, what did the allergist say? It's fantastic that you are breastfeeding your daughter, perhaps that's enough, and she doesn't need extra milk for now? If that's not the case, and she does need something extra, then I would agree with a PP to try Neocate, which is a hydrolysed formula available on prescription. Personally, I would stay away from soy based milks. A huge amount of people with cows milk issues also have issues with soy (again, myself and my DS, particularly DS), so it's usually not the best replacement. And although the goats milk protein is smaller, therefore easier for humans to digest, some people with cows milk problems also have problems with goats milk.
If your daughter has a known allergy then I wouldn't be playing around too much, I would seek help from someone who can give you good, solid advice about what she needs ATM. FWIW, my DS (23 months) has rice milk, as it was really the only replacement he would happily drink. But we give him a calcium and magnesium supplement, as advised by our naturopath.
HTHs, good luck![]()
