Full time is usually 4 days a week (Mon-Thurs) and part time 2 days a week. The day is similar to a school day, around 9-3 etc. If you talk to them about your current situation they can do their best to accommodate but generally, you have to get to TAFE for all 4 days, one way or another... basically, each day is made up of different subjects so you have to have done Monday's at some point, Tuesday's at some point, Wednesday's at some point and Thursday's at some point if that makes sense. If you want to just do mornings one term then afternoons for another that could possibly work but it really depends on how the particular TAFE structures the subjects in a day/week so the best thing to do is give them a call or go in for a chat -- they do try their best to make it work for you. At least, that is how it was at my local TAFE.

Have you considered the program where you can be sponsered by a hospital/medical facility and study at the same time? therefore you get practical training to consolidate your theory AND you get paid. A lot of nursing homes do it and St Vincent's Private used to do it (not sure if they still do).
not sure - but if you contact your Department of Human Services or similar, they should be able to tell you. I know the Govt in several States ran some programs to try and get people into the industry a few years back - not sure if it is still being done. Or contact the venues you would be interested in working at and ask if they have anything like it.
I am studying Div2 at the moment through chisholm in berwick - I am doing it part time (2 days a week) but full time is only 3 day but with twice the workload which i know i wouldnt be able to handle with my girls and the rest of my life going on.
My hours are wed 3pm to 7.30ish and fri 8am - 3pm and i am somehow managing to get my study done although there is a fair bit of homework to do!
Apprenticeships Plus do Div 2 as a traineeship. You get placed at an aged care facility (min 15 hrs per week) and go to school (Australian Catholic Uni in the city) for 1 full day per week (9-3.30). You get paid for work and for the day at school. The traineeship goes for 2 years and also includes medical endorsement. You also do placement in other areas (accute, psych etc).
Cindy that's great you're doing your Div2! How are you liking it? Are you hoping to do Div1 one day, or are you happy to leave it at Div2? Would love any feedback you have on the course, as well as how you're going doing it with two kids! Are you working at all ATM?
Thanks for that info Ubba. I like the idea of doing it as a traineeship, but I guess I would have to consider finances and family stuff. Can you request a cap on how many prac hours you do? Or can they make you do many more than 15? Being paid for being at school as well is pretty good, but I'm guessing it's not a great hourly rate . I'd always thought I would have to work at my current job PT while studying, which is okay, it pays pretty well. But it would obviously be better to work at what I'm learning, I think I learn better on the job anyway.

I am working - LOTS I manage a dental surgery 2 days a week AND i spend most of my weekends doing TUpperware parties. It is hard to get time to study but at the same time, i am loving the course so i make time for it.
I have the girls in child care one day a week which means that on that day (fridays) I finish between 1.30 - 3 so i go home and study for a few hours before i pick the girls up. And I am lucky that on the wednesdays (i start at 3pm) DP takes the day as his RDO and has the girls for the day but I usually leave home about lunch time and go into the library at school to get some more study done.
THe workload is pretty full on and i couldnt imagine doing it with the full time course load (double the subjects I am doing but with only 1 extra day) A big part of our course is lab sessions and also clinical placements, we are doing our first placement in a few weeks which will be great!
With regards to doing Div1 -I am not sure, I am still not sure what area of nursing I want to work in, the Div 2 course has the medications and IV endorsement in it now so that means we can do alot more than just cleaning people and making beds ! THey are employing more and more DIv2 nurses in hospitals - even in ICU these days so I am thinking that I will work a few years - TRY to work out where my heart lies and then perhaps go to uni and specialise... who knows - also Holms Glen tafe is starting a TAfe Div1 course which will be great - should keep the hecs debt to a minimum.
My course has cost me $1500 plus books so far and that will be it for this year - not sure if we have to pay more next year yet....
GOod luck with it all! THis is something that i have been putting off for years and mid year last year I just thought - I have to do it! I figured i would sit the entrance exam and just see if it was meant to be.... So excited to see I got in though!

boxhill's fees are around $10k for the courese, why is it so much cheaper at chisolm? berwick is too far for me to go. might go look at holmesglen too.

Janie- Trying to think back...... pretty sure the hourly rate is around $12 per hour which is really sucky, but you do get all your training - plus it is hands on clinical training as apposed to classroom theoretical training like at TAFE. You still go out on clinical placements, I just feel you learn more on the job.
As for the hours, the minimum you are required to do as per your training agreement is actually 30 hours per f/n (plus your day at school). It is up to you if you want to negotiate more hours.
