DD2 has tonsillitis & is really sick.
Fever pretty much staying over 39. When it drops, it goes down for about an hour, then starts coming back up again after having some panamax. Panadol wasn't bringing it down at all.
She is on penicillin, but is refusing to take it. She was supposed to have 10mls when we got home last night, then another 10 mls before going to bed. I only ended up getting about 5 - 6 mls into her out of 20
Today she is no better. Still won't touch meds of any kind. I've been giving her about 2 - 3 mls in watered down juice today so she'll have her abs. Is this ok? I'm trying to slowly get the 20 mls into her she needs by the end of the day, rather than in just 2 doses.
I'm also worried about her hydration. She wee'd only 2 or 3 times yesterday, once over night & only once today so far. Her lips are very dry. At what point should I worry? She is sipping juice & water, but I really don't think she's having enough to keep up with a 39 degree temp.
It sounds to me as if you have two main problems going on here - her dehydration and her refusal to take her antibiotics.
I think if it were only one of the other, you might be okay at home, but given that she sounds as if she is starting to get dehydrated (and with her high temperatures she will dehydrate more quickly) and it also sounds as if you don't have much chance of getting the antibiotics into her, I would strongly consider taking her to the hospital to be assessed. It may be in her best interests to be admitted, have an IV put in to both rehydrate her and to give her her antibiotics for a few days until she is better.
Thanks. I was hoping you'd come in.
I have an appointment to see how she's doing in the morning with my gp. Should I see how we go til then or take her in this afternoon? I have no car, & the local hospital is 20kms away, hossy with kids ward is 60 kms away, so I'd have to wait for my mum to finish work.
Well I'm just waiting for my gp to ring me back. Getting clothes ready to take JIC.
Will head into the hossy when mum gets here. Hopefully will have spoked to my gp by then. Her lips are starting to bleed from being dry. She still hasn't been to the toilet. Not since...well just after she woke up at 8am I think.
I would definately take her to the hossy. For her lips - try some vasoline if you've got some. Just a smidge to help them stop from further cracking.
Have you tried to syringe fluid into her cheek? Do 10ml every 10 min to try and get her hydration up until you get her assessed. Offer her anything to drink you think she might take - anything is better than nothing at this point. Also, jelly if you have any. Ice cream, ice blocks. They will help the throat, and also count as fluids.
I hope the hossy will admit your little one to get the hydration and AB's in. If you're having trouble reaching your GP, perhaps try calling the hossy and see what they say. It will also warn them you are on the way.
We just got out of hospital today. She tested positive for both strep tonsillitis & glandular fever.
She's alot better now, but went through hell in hospital.
They tried for about an hour to get the first canula in, after about 6 hous she complained it was hurting, & we discovered it was going into tissue. So 2 lots of penicillin & all the iv fluids were wasted.
The next morning they tried the canula again. After an hour of trying & her still feeling it after 2 shots of anesthetic they gave up.
Tried for another 40 minutes to get a nasal gastric tube down, but her throat was too swollen & they couldn't do that either.
Tried all day to get fluids into her. Lemonade, juice, water...nothing. And not one single wee. That night they got the tube down & it finally got easier.
My poor baby
Oh Skye! What an experience! I hope she is doing much better now. And how are you doing? It must have been hell for you. Glad to hear you're home though.
