Why are people rude and tell me what to do with my nappy choices?!

    Hi Ladies,

I am having more of a rant than anything. We have decided that we will be using cloth, my reasons are 1 cost over time, 2 kinder to environment, 3 I just prefer cloth over plastic etc. So they are my reasons, and I don't preach that to friends/family/relatives who already have babies (I am preg with no 1) So why do they feel it is necessary to tell me I am crazy/stupid for creating more work for myself, it is 'disgusting' and disposables are so much easier/better and really not that expensive (oh and the BIG question someone even asked me..... can't you afford disposables?) How rude!!!!

Has anyone else had people like this? Do you just ignore them or say something to them? I have never told my friends how to raise there kids, so why do they feel they have to tell me? (I guess I am not experienced?! lol)

Just tell them that you are doing what works for you, just like they are doing what works for them. If they have a problem with that, too bad! Your life, your choice.

People really are strange sometimes! Disgusting? disposables not that expensive? What the? I don't know anyone that weird!
I am a total cheapskate when it comes to nappies, and proud of it. Just tell those friends of yours that you will enjoy spending your money on more enjoyable things for bubs than bum covers.
Why does it matter to them anyway? Do what feels right to you and don't worry about the opinions of others. Start thickening that skin now because there will be plenty more occasions when you will need to brush off ignorant comments from people who think they know best.

You could just say to them, "I can understand you having a problem if I were asking you to wash them but I am not so there is no prob."

That might shut them up or at least get them to realise that they are the ones making a mountain out of a molehill.

I am a sposie user but dont have a prob with people using cloth. I actually envy them. LOL!

you wait until you have bub....
yep and this is my second in cloth....you'd think I'd have it covered by now. So then I show them my beautiful boy's funkily clad behind...they either shut up or ask where I get them.

I dunno know why they get so silly about it - it's not like you are asking them to change your childs butt!

However - I'm pretty sure they have no idea about MODERN cloth nappies, and most likely think about the old terrys and plastic pants. Even if you were I can't see why it should be something to be irritated about!
As Kim says - they will soon shut up when they actually SEE what you are talking about

When I told people i use cloth nappies their first reaction is "ohh, but why? ... so much work ... disgusting to be washing poo, blah blah"

Then I explain to them that cloth nappies have totally changed ( most people (believe it or not) dont know what MCNs are!) and that because DD had eczema it was better for her so i don't mind the extra work for my DD. Always shuts them up.

It is even funnier with 3 in cloth - I just say something along the lines of 'I'm not spending $50 a week on nappies and I NEVER run out. Sometimes it is more of a nightmare to go to the shops with 3, so I have made it easier for myself by making sure that if I am low on nappies I only need to go to the laundry.' That usually shuts them up, considering co-ordinating nap times and the every day is hard enough without having to go and do an emergency supermarket trip.

People can be so rude. But once your bub has such such a cute bum, everyone will be asking where you got them. I think most people don't know about MCNs so when you say you're using cloth, they think the old terry squares with plastic pants. Don't let them get to you... just do what's right for you.
