You could always advertise in your local paper or maybe have a chat to the Lost Dogs Home in North Melbourne. Wish you luck. Thankfully my cats have tolerated the inclusion of children in their lives, sometimes they seem quite put out about it, but overall they have been ok.
I would try Gumtree.com.au (which is very popular in WA but you might have something more popular)
Also if you post a cute looking photo down on the local notice board, (as not all seniors are online- and they are ideal adopters) you might get some hits.
Sorry but I cannot understand why you would want to re-home, pets are FOR LIFE. Is there anyway you can make small changes so the cat is happy ? what seems to be the problem with the cat ? what is the cat doing to make you think he/she is unhappy with life ?
Samanatha Jane, I'm sure Amber hasn't reached her descicion without a great deal of thought. Pets are for life but sometimes we need to acknowledge that we are not providing them with a lifestyle that is making them happy and make a choice that is better for them rather than continuing to make them miserable in order to live up to a cliche. Amber is doing the right thing and trying to rehome her herself not dumping her on the pound so she deserves our support.
Amber, the Trading Post has 'free to good home section'.
