After deciding to try again with a different kind of carrier to those I've tried and that didn't work for me (a ring sling and a didymos wrap, both borrowed from my dedicated-baby-wearing sister - neither were working for me or DD), I ordered an ergo and it came today.
It's brilliant!
I put DD into it after a feed, and while it was a struggle the first time, to get her in, she settled right down and was asleep in about 5 minutes. She's never slept in a carrier before and barely sleeps in my arms, even, so this is really something.
Today I've carried her in it for 3 to 4 hours: to a parents group meeting, to the post office, home again and carrying her while using the computer (yay for not having to type one-handed!). DD slept through most of that time. I got a bit tired, but after 4 hours of carrying her, on the first day, I'm not worried by that (and she's a big baby - 6 kg already). I'm using the newborn insert and carrying her in a sling-like sideways carry, with her head to one side and her legs to the other. This is almost exactly the position I mostly carry her in in my arms anyway, so it works for both of us.
The carrier is comfortable, seems to support her well, holds her close so she doesn't pull me too much off balance, and is genuinely hands-free (something neither the sling or the wrap was, for me). The head-cover bit works great to cover her face from bright light or to shade her when she's asleep, but we added a bunny rug wrapper around her legs for warmth, in case she got cold feet.
I am so very pleased to have found something that works for us. I was starting to think there was nothing much that would suit a large young baby who doesn't have good head control yet, but this seems to really do the trick and I reckon it's going to be well worth the $$ to buy it. I'm looking forward to when she has the head control to sit up in it, and also to trying the back and hip carries when the time comes.
oh yes I love love love love love LOVE my ergo too.
I've had ring slings, mei tais, didy and storch wraps, HAB and close baby carriers... but the one that was the best and still is is the ergo! Ashton is now 11kg and I can back carry him without even feeling it. It's the most comfortable thing
I LOVE my Ergo too. It is getting a lot of use at the moment - my DS2 is a little koala! This is the second baby to use my Ergo, worth every cent....I wish I had 2. One to keep in the car, and one to use at home.
