When can I try a sippy cup?

DD won't take EBM in a bottle. Just wondering when I can try a sippy cup instead? What type do I buy?

I tried at around 6ish months with both, around the time they started solids, because I wanted to give them plenty of time to get used to it before I went back to work. It did take them a while to get the hang of it though.

I used cups with soft spouts (Tommee Tipee for DS, Mag mag (??) for DD) and then when they sort of got the idea of it, I switched to a straw cup (wouldn't recommend this for a 4 mo though).

I started giving water when we started solids, 4ish months. She didnt really take it until 6ish months, but its worth a try, she may take to it early if its EBM (Jazz wont take EBM at all)?

My little fella wont take a bottle - fullstop - tried lots of different combos - so we have moved to cup - as Teru said - I have bought the avent sippy attachments - and believe it or not he prefers to have it free flowing so just take the plastic off the back of the attachment - of course he cant do it by himself with no control of milk just yet - but he gets with idea.

Whatever type you get - I thik taking the plastic thing off for them to have a first suck of what is in it - and then putting it back on so they know what they are aiming for - is a good idea. Otherwise they have no idea to start with when they are little why they have this thing in their mouths which is nothing like a nipple

I started dd at about 6 month on the nuby straw cup, and now at 12 months loves it, for water. I started with the long straw bit taken out and just the top attached so could tip it up, then added the rest back in once she got the hang of it.

My boys started drinking EBM from a sippy cup at around 3 -4 months as they wouldn't take bottles. There are a few different sorts that you can try. DS1 started with a mag mag cup, and DS2 started with his brother's take and toss cup! Some kids are fussy with them, others will drink from anything. GL hun!

SJ - I fed X once using a sippy cup because she was refusing the bottle. It took a little longer, but it worked. It is worth a try!

We are starting DD on her sippy cup in 2 wks when we start her on rice cereal and pureed foods!! (exciting!). We just bought the Nuby one as i've heard lots of babies like those one's and it was on special. It has a soft spout.
I'm going to give DD EBM in it rather than water at this stage. Not sure if she'll take it or not though but it's worth a try....

Ashton has a nubby one. I love them because they don't have a valve which can be hard to suck for little kids, mine never got the hang of those, the nubby one is a soft spout that is spill proof but very easy to get fluid out of. THey only have to suck or bite it for it to flow out.

I gave Ashton one from about 7 months when he started solids.

With the Heinz ones, once Jazz got the hang of a sippy cup, and sitting up with it, the valve wasnt a problem. We tried a few and she prefers the valve ones, I guess so she can 'regulate' the flow.

Over here in the UK we have a type of sippy cup called a Doidy cup (they're manufactured over here). I think you can get them off various websites in Australia. It's a bit difficult to visualise, but it's a cup that has the sides tilted at an angle but it still sits flat when you put it down. The tilted sides allow baby to see the contents of the cup when they bring the cup to their face without having to tilt their head back or down, teaching baby how to drink from a rim. It has little handles for bubs to hold. Because of the flat base and the slanting sides it's also good for learning how to put a cup down.

DD has been using one for about a month and whilst she doesn't have the control at knowing how far to tip it up to get the liquid out, she is learning, and can hold it on her own and is really happy drinking from it.

DD took a sippy cup full time from 7 months - we went from breast to the spouted cup.
    she refused the bottle

DS takes the bottle for milk - but will drink his water from a sippy cup (spouted cup).
Eventually we will transition it to a sippy cup full time.

We have used the Heinz 4m+ one since about that time as DD won't take EBM from a bottle.

There are a nuby brand in woolworths which I am finding brilliant.. They are cheap and I think great
