We have a morning and an afternoon in Christchurch (non consecutive). What area is good for people watching while we eat? Is there a cafe/restaurant precinct? We don't really have time for touristy stuff so we'd like to spend some time in whatever area has a bit of character.
It's pretty small, all the "precincts" are pretty much on top of each other. I'd say go into town and hang out near the cathedral, it's so lovely there. If you want the boys to burn some energy you can climb to the top of the spire, I remember doing it as a kid and it was great fun. There's nice little coffee places dotted around there too.
I was born and raised in Christchurch - it is a beautiful city. There is a precint known as 'the strip' which is just opposite the river avon - not far from the Cathedral. Lots of places to eat and a lovely view. If you ask you concerige they will be able to direct you.
