    Importing sperm

    Hi all,

I wonder if anyone has any experience with arranging the importation of known donor sperm from Europe? Our friend is going to be our donor and we're looking into the possibility of getting him to do all the testing, deposits, etc in his country (legislation is the same as VIC, so ok) and then transporting it. I'm assuming this is something we have to organise ourselves with a shipping company or similar? Any info would be useful, ie who to contact, costs, ease in arranging, etc. Or is your experience that most IVF clinics would/should know how to do this and would assist us?

    Cheers,

    Hello,

the laws regarding overseas sperm will be changing on the 1st of January 2010. The govt is requiring all IVF clinics to use only sperm donations in Australia. They are no longer using imported donor sperm.

I don't mean to crush your dreams and hopes. Im just alerting you to this in case you want a few children with this known donor.

I don't understand the govt why are they trying to make it hard for us to get sperm in order to have children.

    sincerely

Hi Redlady, wow your post has really thrown me - who gave you this information? I'm going to call my clinic this morning to see if they also know about this and if they do, why haven't they advised me. As if it isn't hard enough, the govt is really trying to end all chances of families who can't conceive naturally with more laws ... first it was donors not being able to be completely anonymous, then it was police checks, followed by reducing the medicare rebate and now only being allowed to use local donors...even adoption is near impossible with all its associated laws.

Thanks for so much for this info. What are you planning to do - do you have a known donor or does your clinic have a not-so-long anon. donor waiting list?

    Hi Lieve,

Our IVF clinic gave us this information. It will be a requirement for Vic and NSW from Jan 1st 2010. It will be rolled out across other states and become national. QLD is next.

Our IVF clinic has a long waiting list of known donors 12-18 months. They do NOT take unknown donors, nor do they import sperm. We are on the waiting list and getting frustrated. And thats why we are using a known donor who we advertised for privately and trying home insemination whilst we wait.

Im sorry if this has dashed your dreams just thought you would like to know. The govt is really being sneaky hey. Blasted Govt.
