URGENT is anyone online to give me advice....

My son came out covered in spots today, I took him to the doctor who told me it was an allergic reaction to something (not sure what but could have been cows milk?) So I brought him home.

All day he was crying, not wanting to be held, rocked, sleep, play, sit, lay.... nothing, he just cried & cried.

I finally got him to bed around 6pm (he was sooooooo tired) which is his usual bedtime. He usually sleeps through til 6:30am without so much as a peep. He has been stirring & making little cry sounds & also a bit of coughing since I put him down. I've checked on him several times because this is out of the ordinary.

I was just on my way to bed & as usual checked the kids. Tobias felt awfully hot (he doesnt even have his normal sleeping bag on, just a bonds wondersuit, thats it, not even a blanket etc) so I took his temperature. It's 38.9, I checked a few times & it's still the same (haven't checked in past 5 mins, I will again when I've finished typing this)

Should I be worried? (Well I am anyway) what would you do if it was your child? I dont know whether I should call the after hours home visit doctor (I dont even know if he visits this late) I'm a little nervous just leaving him to see how he is in the morning. There has been one CONFIRMED swine flu case at DD's daycare so I've been extra attentive since then to coughs etc.

Please give me some advice, I cant go to sleep like this........

    TIA

Its so awful when little ones are sick and they cant tell us how they are feeling. I would continue to check him through the night and keep an eye on his temp. Hes obviously feeling miserable poor little darling, for him to be so unlike his normal self. A tepid flannel/bath can help with is temp, as can panadol. If he gets worse I wouldnt hesitate in taking him to emergency as it does sound like quite a bad allergic reaction for him to be feeling so unwell. Hope he starts feeling better soon. I know all too well that feeling..logically as mums we know that sleep and fever are helping our little ones fight off sickness but it doesnt lessen the worry.

If there was a possibility of swine flu I would check his temperature in 1/2 hr to an hour and if it stays the same I would probably try and give him panadol and then check him after about 30 mins to see how that affects him or take him straight to the hospital. either way I think you are in for a long night. Hope his temperature breaks soon

I just gave him some nurofen & his temp is at 38.8 which happens with my thermometre, it shows within .3degrees so it could be 38.9 & then straight after 38.8/7.

I'll just stay up for half an hour & see if his temp goes down. If it doesnt I'll have to get the kids up & head to the hospital (If I can find it!! Only been there once to take my pregnant sister & cant remember where it is!)

I'll let you know what his next temp is.... hopefully at least down to 37

Thanks for your replies, its so hard being a mummy, you get so worried at times!!

You can ring Healthdirect Australia (the 24hr Nurse on call thing) healthdirect Australia 1800 022 222 and they can help assess him over the phone. It might put your mind at ease even if you do end up taking him to hospital. Just to have immediate medical advice helps somewhat. Hmm... just looked at the website and it's not available in Queensland or Vic! Do you have an equivalent up there? I thought it was national! Will leave the number here anyway incase anyone else searches for it.

Just wondering - is fever common with an allergic reaction? It sounds more like an illness to me (my completely non-medical opinion!)

    Hope he feels better soon

Ok, he feels alot cooler to touch. his temp was 38.0 the first time & 38.5 the second time so I did a third time & it was 38.0 So since its gone down I think I might try to get some sleep. Although now I can here him calling out because I disturbed him too much to get his temp as he was fighting me hmmmm I think its going to be a very long night (& I have heaps to do tomorrow as my sisters baby shower is tomorrow night... now I might not be able to attend )

    Thanks again ladies

Your thermometer sounds like ours. We splurged and bought an ear one and OMG i soooo don't trust it. Never seem to get the same reading twice. So I'm back to sticking the cheapo digital one under their arm lol.

Hope you get some sleep and he's feeling better in the morning.

Thanks everyone. Well he seems back to normal today (I havent had a close look at his spots but they're not worse). He ended up going to sleep, waking at 1:45 so I put his dummy in his mouth & covered him with a blanket, back to sleep, woke at 5am, gave him some nurofen, back to sleep until 7:45, then up for the day. So I really cant complain, I thought I was going to be up ALL night. Itdid take me a while to drop off to sleep the first time because I was worried but once I got to sleep I was fine.

Thanks for all your support. It's in times like last night that I really rely on you BB girls & you always come through for me

Hi DM, how is your little man today, if I had come on here last night, I would have told you to go straight to the hospital too. I hope your little bubba is better today. I hope the reason you havent come on here to update is because your catching up on some sleep.
Again I hope all is ok, sending lots of hugs

Hahaha, posted at the same time.... I am so glad your bubba seems better today. I would probably get the spots checked again by maybe a different DR, or even see the DR again today and let him know what happened last night and if he still thinks it is an allergic reaction. hugs

I am so glad Tobias is feeling better Definitely sounds like a classic case of Roseola to me. I hope it's not an allergy..but you will find most doctors have a standard answer of "looks like a reaction to something" or "it's a viral thing" (and they can't tell you which virus, LOL.)

Hope you can both get some rest today after your long night. Well done looking after him mummy.

Yeah, I wouldn't be worrying about the allergy diagnosis any more, unless you get a reaction next time he has cows milk.
Honestly, I would've done what you did. Stripped him, dosed him up & kept an eye on him over the next day or so.
I was at the hospital for you last night My baby man has croup. Would've been there right when you were posting!
