I was going to suggest that as well followed by a wash with some dishwashing detergent and water...

Rayray i have the same problem ... Hope someone has a solution in which it has been trialed by them

(I was thinking a light swip of nailpolish remover but scared it will take heap of surface off which will look worse then it does now )

    Surface
    chalkboard − slate or green
    Materials
    Sponge

    Liquid dishwashing detergent

    Soft cloth

    WD−40 (car part lubricant)

    Warm water

    Procedure
Spray the surface to be cleaned with WD−40 and wipe clean with a soft cloth. If residue remains add liquid dishwashing soap to water. Wash the surface with a sponge working in a circular motion and rinse.
Found this on the crayola website. Sounds like whats been suggested here so I will try it and report back

If it doesn't work, you can repaint the surface - blackboard paint comes in small tins and is pretty cheap (I've always got free leftovers from work, so i don't know how much it costs) but it's easy.
