Ok so Ds has had a dummy since he was born and only has it in bed. He is now 15 months old and few months back he was quite sick and woke numerous times during the night and i would tuck him back in give him his dummy etc. Ever since he wakes during the night but settles back straight away with the dummy, omg last night it was 8 times, feel like i have a new born again. So i am wondering is it time to get rid of the dummy? or is it just a phase?
I cant put up with it much longer, i feel like i havent slept at all this morning.
Oh, I'm sorry. That sounds really rough on you. Neither of my kids took a dummy (which SUCKED in the early days!) so I don't have personal experience for you. But some of my mates at mothers group did talk about it. Some of them put extra dummies in the cot for bubs to find themselves. Others weaned off the dummy which took a few tough nights with some crying and settling in other ways (patting etc) but they were relieved once the dummy had gone.
As I said, I'm no expert but wanted to say I hope you find a solution that suits you - 8 times a night reminds me of my worst couple of months with Natty (when she was 6-7 mo) and I was a zombie.
DS needs a dummy to sleep as well. We put about 6 dummies in the cot with him at night, so he can usually find one when he needs it. He does tend to have fun throwing them out of the cot when he first goes to bed, so once he's asleep we usually sneak in and put them all back.
He can pretty much get one in his sleep now, its quite impressive actually. We very rarely need to get up for his dummy now.
Ok i might try that, he has four dummies so i will see if that works tonight. I know it only takes 2 mins to put it in and he is back to sleep but 8 times i have trouble getting back to sleep and when its time to get up i am exhausted.
I had a similar experience when my second daughter was 10 months old - I was up and down all night most nights putting a dummy back in. Sometimes it was every 40 minutes. I was going insane. One night instead of giving her the dummy when putting her down, I patted her to sleep without the dummy and she only woke once during the night, at which time I patted her back to sleep again. It only took 2 minutes. And after doing this for a few days, she stopped waking at night.
In my case it definitely was the dummy that was causing major sleep interference.
Just something to think about if extra dummies in the cot don't do the trick!
Thanks chickenlittle i think i will be trying that next. He has been in bed now for 4 hours and has woken three time already, atm i am not seeing the point in sleepy myslef it is driving me insane. I cant believe it after sleeping through the night from 4 months old to this. arggh
