Hi
Georgia is 7.5 months and has started waking up at 2am every morning since about 6.5months. It coincided with her first teeth coming through and at the same time she pretty much went off nearly all her food.
She has slept through the night from a really young age however she went to bed late like 11pm. she has been going to bed now between 8:30 and 9:30 and wakes about 11pm I feed her (breastfed) and then put her back down. Then she wakes again at 2am I feed her and she goes back to sleep till anywhere between 4:30 and 6:30am where I feed her again.
i am struggling to get her to eat 3 meals even two sometimes. I am wondering if she is waking because she is hungry or because she wants to suck. I have been feeding her porridge with a little yohgurt and fruit mixed in at night in the hope it will keep her full but that doesnt seem to be working.
Just after some ideas on what I can do to get her to sleep through again. Is this just a phase or should I just be getting used to waking up at 2am.
I dont have much advise but Bella is 8 .5 months old and has been waking once a night at bout 4 am for the past week and I put it down to her top teeth (now through) and also a growth spurt. She has now gone back to 7.30 - 7.30 so it was just a phase and is gone - untill the next one!
I hope its juts a phase for you and things go back to normal!
mate, night waking sucks doesn't it? I think if one person had the answer to get every little bub to sleep a whole night they'd be a rich person.
If she's still BF well, I wouldn't be too concerned with the lack of solids you feel she's having. I'm pretty sure it's a fallicy that a full belly will help them sleep better.
Noone should get used to wkaing at 2am but sadly I think's it's a 'this too shall pass' phase. One of many more she will have. There's a lot going on in her little brain that's she's processing and I'm pretty sure it's common for them to start waking around this age again anyway.
Thanks girls, I really hope its just a phase.
Re: the solids - the mchn told me I have to make her eat more lumpy foods because I only have a small window between now and 9 months otherwise she might be 2 and struggling with lumpy food how and I supposed to do that when she wont eat lol
but thats another story
My son suddenly started to wake during the night at around 7 months. It also coincided with me going back to work and him starting daycare so I've always blamed that, but it could've been something completely different of course.
He had slept through from 12 weeks so it gave me a bit of a shock to suddenly go backwards like that.
He kept waking through the night til I think 10 or 11 months. I know he'd been sleeping through for a few weeks when he turned one.
I can't give you any advice as nothing much seemed to work. I'd just give him a bottle if he woke up.
So i guess I just keep feeding her at 2am if she wakes and hope it passes - I am a bit concerned though that she is going to get used to the feed at 2am and keep looking for it iykwim
Yep. Bella started sleeping through from 12 weeks also.. then when she got her first lot of teeth (bottom) she woke once a nigh for a week, then last week when her top teeth came through - I just gave her a bottle which she bolted down - so I think a growth spurt as well - and then she would fall back to sleep in my arms... was actaully quite nice to have those cuddles again!
Hey, from my experience (of my 2 DDs and of friends) it is REALLY common for babies to wake more from around 6mths onwards as there is such a lot of brain development going on. It's tough but it will get easier. When she's ready she'll drop waking at that time of night.
Oh, and food - porridge is a fantastic supper/night food. Slow releasing energy and high in Vitamin B6 which can help induce sleep. Banana is too so perhaps give her some porridge with mashed banana? My girls have porridge 20 mins before they go to bed & I think it helps them.
The other thing is really don't worry about getting her to eat lots of lumpy food. Yes, it's great if she's interested but I found that at that early stage, a mixture of lumpy food and mush was best to fill up with DD2. As Georgia is breastfed, i wouldn't worry about the amount of solids at the moment - my MCHN kept saying to me 'food is fun until they're one' - especially if breastfeeding as breastmilk continually changes to keep up with your little ones needs.
With DD1 she didn't actually eat more than a teaspoon of mush per meal until she was 11 months old but then suddenly she took to eating and within 3 months was eating a t-bone steak like it was going to be taken away from her (I have the photo!!). The advice i was given that infants should be eating firmer food by 12 months not just for the foods sake but the chewing aids speech development skills.
Hi thanks Roya that was a really good post thank you for going to the trouble I really appreciate it.
Thanks also to everyone else. I guess I will do what I have always done and go with the flow. See where this new journey ends up
