My poor pooch has had a gash in her foot stitched and it's not allowed to get wet. The problem is she's kept outside when we're not home. How can I keep her foot dry while we're at work? I think a plastic bag would be too big and annoying, she'd probably pull it off.
My dad suggested putting a condom on it then a sock over the top. I know it would work but don't really know if I should.
A condom or plastic of some sort would probably just make the dogs paw sweat, so perhaps just a nice thick bandage with a sock over the top....oh and use some of that medical sticky tape stuff at the top (assuming you have a short haired dog)....Pooch will probably use the bandage to entertain herself with the challenge of taking it off.
I would then take it off, but only when you are around a: to stop her licking it once the bandage is off and b: to let some air get to it to help it dry out.
Thanks for that Julia. She's a sheep dog so has long hair. I don't knwo if an extra bandage would keep it dry though, it's raining and my yard is flooded. I have no idea how to keep it dry other than to leave her inside but she pees in the house if we're not home, never when we are home though.
Ha! I have a Sheepdog too! Not at the moment as I'm living in Singapore and he's back home in Perth with my Mumma. I miss him terribly!
If your garden gets really flooded, then maybe it would be better to leave her inside....a bit of wee is easier to clean up than having an infected foot! It will heal better then and then she'll be able to go back outside. I'd give it a try.
One thing we do is use stubby holders with a sock and tape the top of that on.... Unfortunately plastic that doesn't breath will do more damage than its worth. BUT getting it wet is just as bad.... Do you have a laundry or a garage you can lock him in for the day? With bones or chew stuff as well
We don't have a garage and our laundry has no door (weird house). She stays outside on the verandah but she can get off it and go into the flooded yard. I think the only solution is to leave her inside. I'll try her tomorrow when I go shopping and see how she goes. Thanks for the suggestions. I love the glad wrap and stubby holder ideas and will give them a go tomorrow. ATM I'm using a balloon on her foot and taking her out the front to relieve herself.
