    Preventing mastitis

Our Maltese is pregnant again, last time she had 4 pups and developed mastitis when the pups were 5wks old. She looks much bigger this time and am thinking she may have more than 4 but wondering how she'll cope feeding more, she's such a little dog and if there is anything I could do to prevent her from getting mastitis this time around. She got really sick but pulled through, I don't want her to have to go through all that again. Any advice would be really appreciated.

    Regards,
    Dianne

ITs just the same as us really - she will produce what they need and it will increase if there are more mouths to feed. To prevent mastitis I think you can only keep a close eye on her teats to look for signs of infection especially redness and heat. Did she wean them very quickly last time? Make sure she is on a good quality growth (e.g. puppy) food to get the extra nutrients that she needs above normal adult food. HTH

We introduced puppy food at 5wks which was the time she got mastitis which was lucky because we had to remove her from the pups for 24hrs until she recovered and she then started to wean. Will be giving her puppy food and puppy milk while she is feeding, was thinking whether I should start giving her some puppy milk soon, she is due in about 3wks, just to get her calcium up.

Thank you so much for your advice, I'll get some puppy food tomorrow, I gave her some puppy milk this evening and she gulped it down . Thanks again.

Great. Don't worry too much about the puppy milk. They don't really need it and dry puppy food of a good quality has everything she needs in it. But it tastes good I am sure. lol.
