s/d feline hills food - dog ate it

    Hi,

my stupid labrador (usually she's not stupid, she just looks miserable) ate about a third of a brand new, unopened dry s/d packet (2kg I think?)

is this bad for dogs? Anything I should do? I've just got the cat back from the vet after his surgery / catheter / hospital stay for 3 days due to blocked bladder, so wouldn't appreciate having a sick dog as well!

I'm sure he's fine - I think there's more of an issue with cats eating dog food because of the high sodium, I think the reverse is fine

A vet friend of ours said that cat food is fine for dogs, she said tinned dog food is actually no use to dogs and they would be better off eating cat food.

My dog has eaten the sd cat food a couple of times with no problems (not as much but he's a weeny little dog so prolly in proportion to your lab). You could ring your vet & ask.

Expensive habit tho, that stuff costs a bomb!

I wouldn't think the once off labrador thing will be too bad. The worry is the lower protein, and the PH balancer really, but its definately not as bad as digging something up and eating it, or anything. There won't be any long term affects . My labrador ate 1 kg of feline k/d... she got into it at work!!!

Yep, Dogs can eat cat food but cats can't eat dog food.

I found when I dog eats the cat food that his poo is more likely to smell and that he will poo more. That could just be him though.

Not as a regular thing though (dogs eating cat food). Cat food is higher in fat and has an extra protein generally which isn't necessary in a dogs diet. Neither should have high sodium, cat food may be higher actually...

Well she had horrid dog farts all night, took her out around 2:30am and she cleared her bowels then ... a lot happier dog now.

The cat's OK, not eating much but he's showing interest in food which is a huge win!
