How do I find a really good accountant???

We are looking for someone who really knows their stuff when it comes to property, investments and tax benefits.
The advice always is to 'get recommendations from friends/relatives', but we don't know anyone who uses one.
And what's a reasonable rate for someone good? I'm willing to pay to make sure I get someone who gives accurate advice but have no idea what to look for...
Any advice would be much appreciated.

Probably best to go for a CA, CPA or NIA. You can go to their websites and they should have a find an accountant search. On the CPA Australia site you can search by location and type of service provided. Also if you go for one of the medium larger firms in your area they will tend to have a range of accountants with different skills, so if you call one with your type of query they should be able to put your through to the best one.
