Hi ladies, I am having my baby at the Wesley in brisbane, i was wondering at what stage should i be booking in for my antenatal classes? should i book in soon? has anyone else done them here? are they good?
Also when should i get a list of what tto take to the hospital?
The hospital classes there fill up quickly - it's best to book at the same time as you book into the hospital. I'm surprised they didn't tell you that. It's definitely worth doing their classes as you get to see the delivery suites etc and learn a bit about their policies etc. However, in terms of really useful information for how to get through labour and birth in the best way, the classes at the hospital are pretty useless.
I recommend that you do book into the hospital classes, but also try and get into an externally run birthing class. Also, I highly recommend booking in for a Breastfeeding Education class through the ABA (check out their website Australian Breastfeeding Association) and reading New Active Birth by Janet Balaskas.
Best of luck hun. By preparing yourself before the baby arrives you are likely to have an easier time of labour, birth and the early weeks with a newborn and being much happier for it.
I'm not sure about the Wesley (I'm booked into the MM Private) I called mine about a month ago and they were already full. If this happens to you too, they should still have the hosp tours available. Atleast that way your familiar with the labour rooms and where to go when the time comes ect... There are a few private classes (classes not run by the hossi) that you can do instead (I'm going for one that also includes hypno-birthing) Usually when you book in they send you like an info pack giving you all the details of what to bring ie; labour, hosp stay bub, and any other info that relates to your stay like meals, what is available in the rooms, caffeterias (sp?) visiting hours, volenteres (sp?) who may visit you, and the home midwife programe brochure (if you want to go home early, a midwife comes and visits you at home instead of hossi) and the brochures about the classes available.. bla,bla,bla...This is basically what was in mine, yours may be different but If you STILL havn't received your info pack, call them and they will should send you one out. Hope this helps!!
I am having bub at Mater Mothers and didn't like the idea of driving in and paying ridiculous parking fees multiple days for the duration of the classes so I did my Hospital Tour at MM to get familiar with the Birthing Suites etc and then did a 1 day 9am-5pm Antental Course through Stork, Baby and You, it was about $200 but well worth it in my opinion, I only did it a couple of weeks ago and there were a few ladies there who were 35 weeks and one or two that were less than 20 and everyone else was somewhere in between... Good luck with everything!
I'm having my baby at Mater Mothers also and was told to book into my antenatal classes now for January as they book up quite quickly but that could be because it is public. So I am booked in for the middle of January.
I say try and ring them asap and see when you can get in.
