    Fleas and new puppies!

As i mentioned in a thread earlier my dog had 9 beautiful pups on the weekend...ofcourse i was planning on having her washed again on the weekend to try and get rid of her fleas (its like a never ending battle for us!) before she gave birth...

Now she has had her puppies we cant wash her in any flea shampoo coz if the puppies should happen to suckle on her afterwards (which we all know they will lol) they will apparently digest the chemicals?

SO, how can i treat my dogs fleas whilst she is nursing her pups? Anyone have any ideas? Id hate for these gorgeous little pups to start life with nastly little fleas on them!

    TIA

Frontline spray can be used early on... or is it advantage puppy? I can't remember LMAO.... I'm pretty sure one of them can be used on 4 day old pups.... I would go to the vet or call and ask if Capstar can be used with nursing dogs, because that will get rid of infestations and its a tablet you can give. Then you can wait a few more days for the frontline thing. The frontline has to be a spray for the pups, not the spot on one.

We had nine pups at once, too - and all of them had fleas. I remember being overdue to have bub #1 and bathing these puppies in the sink in a little warm bath...I can't remember exactly what it was that we used, but it was some natural tea-tree based stuff we got from a pet place, I think? Mild enough for puppies, anyway. I put them in the water, gave them a good scrub down and lather up, then pulled the fleas off that hadn't come off by then one by one. In our case, their mum had rejected them and we were bottle feeding (which was soooo much fun when we had a newborn as well *twitch twitch*), so we could treat her separately anyway. But they were so much happier once all the little blood suckers were off them!

Good luck with it all...9 at once is certainly hard work

Don't try to make tea tree stuff yourself though... as its been known to scald skin of adult dogs let alone pups

    Thanks ladies!

I looked on the frontline website and it says the spray can be used on puppies as early as 2 days old as well as lactating mums (they used the b word! lol i hate that)

Arg 9 pups! Sounds like SO many! Howd you cope Bec, i hope i do ok lol

I hope this gets rid of the little terrors (fleas not puppies!)

lol i have had 13 pups at once....now that is fun!!!!

you can also put baby powder on them...keeps fleas away...BUT use the flea products asap..... and keep up to date with them....the fleas can & will make very young pups anaemic and can kill them

We had a shocking infestation a few years ago, then the cat had kittens. Oh and the WORST shag pile carpet you've ever seen
Fleas don't like mint apparently so I grabbed handfuls out of the garden, crushed them a bit and laid them around the kittens box and around our beds (dp was being eaten alive) and it helped.

ooo mint hey! My dog would probably eat it! LOL. I HATE fleas! ggrr. OMG couldnt imagine having shag pile carpet! That would be IMPOSSIBLE to get them out of!

Thanks fluff! Am planning on popping to the pet store this morning, i picked as many as i could off all the dogs!

What happenes when i spray the flea stuff on the pups and the mum goes to lick them or clean them? And the same with the mum, what happens if it goes on her nipples and the pups suck on them?
