Suitable pet for a 2yr old?

Im having trouble deciding which pet is suitable for DS.
I would LOVE to get him a dog but its just not a good idea for us at the moment as we dont have a backyard So a cat would be out of the question too! (im a big believer that cats and dogs belong OUTSIDE lol)

I was thinking maybe a fish???
what other small (non expensive) pets would you suggest?

I would go a fish......It's a pretty easy option when you don't have a garden. A fighting fish, in a really small tank....OR an Axelottel (sp?) Walking fish...for something different. Or a little Bunny or Guinea Pig, Rat or Mouse?

Although, I don't think a cat really needs a back garden in a sense, they just wonder whenever and whereever they please.

A lizard? Oooh a turtle? Snails??

I know DS would have been happy with any of those, but we have two cats (indoor ) and a dog (outdoor) and he absolutely loves playing with the cats - they have a special relationship - he lays on them, and they don't scratch

I used to have 2 cats, DS grew up with them, they were only kittens when DS was a baby.. he loved them and they never scratched or anything BUT i gave them away due to not have a backyard etc...
Turtles are expensive here.. about $100!!!!
Im going to go have a look in the pet shop i think....

im getting Hamish a rabbit, soon, he would love a dog and so would everyone but at the moment its just not fair on the dog as we are not home enough. DD always had rabbits growing up, fish are a good start but i think the kids like to touch there pets so thats why we decided on a rabbit.

Hermit crabs are great, you can get creative and decorate your own shells etc. Also they are low-smell!

When we move in a couple of months we'll be getting Lily and Charlie a mouse each. I was thinking of a Guinea Pig each, but i think mice are cuter.
