breakthrough bleeding/spotting becoming a common occurance

For about my last 4 or 5 cycles I've notied I've had some spotting around 5 days before AF is due. I wasn't really taking much notice of it but now it's starting to make me wonder whether something is going on.

I haven't been on the pill since before DD was born and I usually have a 30day cycle. But to give you an example of what has happened this cycle on day 25 I had what i though was the start of AF because it was more than slight spotting. Then days 26, 27 i had very light spotting only. Day 28 virtually nothing then on day 29 AF came with a vengeance. I've also noticed that in my last 2 cycles AF itself has been heavier than normal.

Not sure if I should just wait and see if this goes away or if it could be something more sinister?

    Hi Mara,

I would go to your GP to get them to check it out. I had mid-cycle spotting just once which was unusual for me so I went to my GP, sent for an ultrasound and they found an endometrial polyp which i've since had removed. No spotting since and now UTD.

can't hurt to get it checked out.

    Good luck

    thanks for your reply Jules

After posting I had a bit of a think and I actually had a total thyroidectomy back in january and now need to take thyroxine. If I'm not taking quite enough thyroxine it can cause irregular/heavier bleeding so I'm going to have a BT to see where that's at and hopefully that's the cause. I will keep you posted.
