I'm doing the right thing?? wrt vomiting

DS woke up at 4:40 this morning and made a HUGE poo. I changed him and gave him some milk. He laid down next too me - we were banned into dd's room because ds was having a hard time setteling and sleeping - and after about five minutes he vomitted ... all the milk he just drank.

So I cleaned him, pulled the matteress from under the bed, and we settled in again, only for him to make ANOTHER very smelly, very runny poo *TMI* ... So I changed him and we bunked down again. He vomitted more milk. We had a bath and I washed his hair. Good thing the sun started to come up, because I was running out of beds

He vomitted two more times. I gave him a suppository (sp) and he fell asleep in his daddy's arms while I was washing vomit from my hair.

So here is the actual question.

DH is bugging me to take him to the dr. I say no. He does not have a fever, have not vomitted since 7:30 this morning (it's now 9:30) He did not make another poo. I left some of that electrolite water-stuff with the nanny for him, just to try and keep him hydrated. I told her that she could give him some porridge (about three spoons) and see if he keeps that down and then try some more, but not to force him. No formula, only water and diluted juice.
I say it's only a tummy bug. No need for the dr ... what do you think??

I did however phoned the dr to ask for a prescription for more of the supositories so that I'm armed in case he starts vomitting again during the night. She also told me that she is getting a lot of patients with tummy-flu this week and to bring him in if the vommiting continues.

What would you do??

I would have waited and seen how he went to.. No need to go to a place full of germy people if there is nothing for them to do anyways kwim?

Nic - that was what I was thinking too ... and I hate going to the dr. They always make you wait so long and with a fussy baby ... argh

So I phoned home ... he is doing great. He is up and even held down some porridge and some of the electrolite-water. He is chasing his sister and has fallen off the only step in the house So accident one for the day is done and he seems fine. I'm still getting the supositories for tonight ... just in case. Kids tend to get sick at 2am in the morning

I get a bit iffy when he is sick ... I'm not used to him being off.

The major concer with D&V is dehyration. Keep an eye on how many wet nappies he is having and the wee should be almost clear. If he continues to vomit and have loose bowels, developes a fever or seems weak and lethargic, or shows signs of dehyrdation then get him to a Dr. If he tolerates fluid then keep going with that, milk/formula won't harm him either.

Stupid question here - what do you need to use the supositories for again? Never used for either of my kids so was just wondering what we're missing out on......

He is doing fine. No more vomit, no more poosplosions. He held down his weetbix this morning and his rooibos tea. He is currently pestering his sister. I think it was maybe just a silly 24 hour bug thing.

I use supositories for high fever and vomit, because a) you can get it in .. no messing around with siringes, spoons whatever. My kids don't have any trouble with taking meds, BUT if they are sick .. oh boy. And ususally with vomit, if they vomit just after taking the meds, you are not allowed to giv more, so you have to wait the whole 4-6 hours before you can medicate again And b) it works QUICKLY. I have emergency supositories in my fridge for those 2am 40 degree fevers.

I have never used suppositries either on my kids - are they safe for babies? I assume they are and it is not a judgemental question, my GP has never even mentioned them to me.

FWIW - my little one has had the poos and spews the past 48 hours too, but no fever - he is still happy and drinking so I am not too worried - yet

Ahh, so you mean instead of oral panadol. My Dr. has never mentioned them either, but they do sound like an easier way to get them in (in a round about way ).

There must be some tummy bugs going around as my one year old is just getting over a weeks worth of vomitting/runs, not nice (we didn't go to the Dr as I wondered what they could do about it).

I believe so ... my dr has three kids of her own.
And they are not to be used every day ... I just use them when I'm at a loss or they are really, really sick and nothing else is working. Like I give panadol (panado) oraly and if fever does not come down, I'll give a sup of Ponston. You can give those two together.


Oh yeah BTW ... ds were spreading the love around and gave me the trots I'm lucky it is a 24 hour thing. I hope his sister does not catch it.
