Question Fiji.... do you need malaria shots?

    Hi,

Has anyone here been to Fiji recently and if so, did you get Malaria shots before you left? We are heading over in December (woohoo!) and my friend recently went and found out over there that Malaria is quite common over there but noone had warned her about getting any shots for Fiji. She took her little boy over who is the same age as DD but didnt have any shots either. I don't like the idea of shots anyway especially for DD.... try to avoid them!
I found some info on the Travel Doctor website but just wanted to hear others opinions/experiences with travelling to Fiji.

From what I understand, it's a pretty safe destination in terms of local disease risks.

I'm not so worried about me and DH but our 9mth old DD.

We went a few months back, didn't take Malaria Meds. (It's a tablet you take before, during, and after)
I was sure there was no Malaria in Fiji, but i could be wrong?! ETA- just looked on on few sites, they all say no Malaria in Fiji?!

The side effects can be pretty horrible from the tablets and i'm not sure that babies can even take them. Worth checking with a travel Dr if you are worried about it.

Maybe my friend meant Dengue Fever?!? Hmmm in which case that's in cairns anyway and you don't need shots to go there.......

    Thanks for your replies!
