    Cleaning a feather doona??

How do I do it? We have a duck down doona which I am ready to pack away for summer, but how do I clean it? I have just been putting it out in the sun over winter to air, but is there any way I could wash it? I am thinking it would probably not be a great idea to throw it in the washing machine?

I am sure there are places that clean down doonas properly but they are not cheap.
My Mum use to just throw ours in the machine with a mild detergent then hang them out on the line.

I have wanted to wash our goose down doonas because they have "that smell" about them but as I wash my linen weekly I just hang them on the line with the linen in full sun to air etc.

Hi, I think they are 'supposed' to be drycleaned, I do put ours in the washing machine like NaeNae suggested: mild detergent/gentle wash. I hang it out in the sun to dry, but always give mine a squirt in the dryer aswell just to fluff it up again.

If it doesn't fit in your washing machine, perhaps take it to one of those landromats that have the really big washers and dryers?

Yes, you can wash them. the drying is a pain as the down clumps together when wet. I read somewhere you take it to a launromat and put a tennis ball in with the doona and it will bounce around and separate all the down and fluff it up. Have not tried it myself.

The Shannon Lush method is to use a cheapo shampoo and tread on it a lot in a bath. If you hang it in a U shape then it is less likely to clump.

    Oooh, thanks every one!
I would have thought that washing it in the machine would ruin the feathers in it.... But it makes it easier that I can wash it at home!! Hopefully it will fit in the machine....if not then I will do it in the bath.
    Again thanks!!
