Question Black Tie Event- oh dear. What to wear?

My DH is a finalist for an award, and we are being flown to Sydney for the Ceremony where the dress is 'formal black tie'. DH asked for clarification on dress, and was told all men will wear bow ties, and all women to wear full length or 3/4 length dresses.

I bought a maternity dress a couple weeks back, and it is gorgeous, but don't know if it is 'formal black tie'. I still have to find shoes, which is never easy.

Can you hire formal dresses- that are maternity dresses? I will be 23 weeks by the ceremony, none of my stuff (or friends dresses) fit me now, so in a few weeks i got no hope.

if the pic gallery works, i will try to post a pic of the dress i have.

Congrats to your DH! There used to be a shop in Mornington that hired maternity formal wear but the name escapes me....that was ~4 years ago tho. I'll try and find out and get back to you. Could you possibly fancy up a plain maxi dress to work - with a sparkly shrug and some fab shoes/accessories?

I couldn't get the gallery to work. Not sure if i was at the wrong place or if it still playing up.

The dress is black and has decoration stuff around the v neck collar (i am so bad at explaining).

Mak, if you remember the shops name that would be great!

(if anyone knows how to work the gallery, i can e-mail a pic if you can post it)

SERIOUSLY don't worry about it too much! I have gotten away with ****tail (which your dress sounds like) to black tie before (2 events in one night) - just put your hair in an updo, nice jewellery, makeup, and some heels if possible. A small clutch will help the look too.

BUT more importantly - people are SO understanding when you are pregnant, I would never ever criticize a pregnant woman for being inappropriately dressed, it's so hard! Everyone knows that!

Black sounds pretty safe to me - you can definitely dress that up.

Otherwise a formal looking maxi dress could work.

I was going to say exactly this. Just wear what you've got.

What are they going to do? Chuck you out because your pregnant?

Good luck for your husband on his award!!!

Yes, black sounds safe. Is it below the knee? I would wear your hair up, and accessorise. Maybe buy a lush looking stole/scarf for your shoulders? A nice clutch would help. You sound fine
