    Asthmatic DS

Hi all but i just want to ask a few questions...
firstly, my DS is 2y8m and he has been diagnosed with Asthma. He is on flixotide and ventolin.
He has been having some trouble breathing last night and today so i immediately took him to our GP who has put him up to 3 puffs of flixotide 2x day and ventolin 3hourly 4x puffs. Also he has been put on redipred once a day for 3 days. How long do we have to keep putting his flixotide up and how many sprays of it can he have at a time?? He is 14kgs
    Thanks in advance.

I would ring the Drs and ask..

but I would also do it for a full 24 hours then as required after that.. but personally think it is better to ring your Dr and ask

Def ring the doctor and ask. Better to be safe than sorry. My ds (2yr 2mths) and we've just been told he's got asthma (not surprising really, as dh and I are both asthmatic!)

Our hardest thing to do was to try and teach him to use the spacer with the ventolin... What 2yo understands that?! Would have been easier with a nebuliser. Dh was hospitalised heaps with his asthma as a kid (starting around this age), so he knew how to teach him, thankfully.

    Best of luck!

Thanks girls, but he seems to be getting worse... which means a hospital trip. Although i dont really want to be taking my other 2, i have to find a sitter for them. Which is hard coz we dont have parents local. My parents in melb and DH's are Overseas. ARGH

    J. I don't know the answer to your initial question but wish I were closer to look after the others for you. Hope the little man is ok. MG and Miss A

DD was started on seretide & ventolin at 2, then was switched to flixotide last year. I try to keep the flixotide going when she's most affected (winter months etc) & make sure I always have ventolin on hand JIC.
When she was first put on ventolin, it was 2 puffs 4 times a day. I think I did it for a couple of weeks, maybe 2, because her asthma was set off by a chest infection & I kept it up til the infection was gone.
I would ring the doc & ask. FYI, from my phone call recently with the health line they can actually have 4 puffs every 4 minutes in the case of emergency til you get to the nearest hospital. Just in case you ever find yourself in that position.

sconeonamission - most chemists hire out nebulisers. I'm lucky that my sister was asthmatic as a child & mum gave hers to me, but its so much easier than a puffer if you can get one. Just ask the doc for a script for the nebules. Mine was happy to do it.

Thanks everyone, i didnt end up going to the hosp thank goodness... He seemed to settle down and have a fitful sleep!!
I was told with the flixotide you are to give every day because it opens up the lungs so they breathe better and there fore not need the ventolin all the time.

Yeah, flixotide is a preventative. Pretty much all except ventolin are
