    Problems with Mirena Coil?

    Hiya,

Has anyone noticed problems with the Mirena Coil? Stuff like severe depression, feeling like just giving up, hair loss, weight gain despite a healthy diet, zero libido???

    Hi
I have had nothing but problems with it. I had it put in last Sept and I am trying to get it removed but can't get in to see my gyn untill mid Jan.

I have Depression already, but the hair loss (I thought was my anti depressants) I have, I also have, pain, bleeding (the more activity I do the more bleeding I get), headaches, and I can't seem to loose weight even though I am eating healthy and doing all the right things (I a have gained a couple of kg not lost them), I am also getting fluid retention.

I regret getting it put in, I didn't want it in the first place but my gyn told me that it was my last resort.
Some women have great outcomes but for me it wasn't a good outcome.
    Take care
    Chris

    Hey Chris,

Same side effects as me for the most part--no headaches or pain, but the weight gain and inability to lose it and my hair loss is significant. Fortunately I have really thick hair, but not anymore. I thought it would be a godsend--light to no periods and not having to think about taking a pill, but it's been a mess for me too. I am getting it taken out next week after about two months.

Why did your doctor say it was your last resort?

I am geting mirena inserted on TUesday, it is my last resort too, it seems that oestrogen makes me go crazy, so all of the pills are out, have tried nearly all of em anyway. Because I was so happy and calm during pregnancy and breastfeeding (which produces Progesteron, the hormone in Mirena) OB thinks its my best bet. If this doesnt work Im in trouble. DH will need to get the snip but also OB is still gonna have to try and sort out my hormones.

Sorry to hijack this thread, but widdly have you considered other progesterone based contraceptions? I'm not an expert but I believe that both the mini pill and also implanon are both progesterone only... anyway just a thought...

miss E - thanks heaps for your suggestions mini pill I dont want cause I never end up taking it properly. Implanon Im too scared to get put in and my sister had a really awful time with one so that really puts me off too. I like Mirena cause its at the site, supposedly less side effects. Thanks again!

Don't be fooled into thinking that because it is at the site that you will have less side effects.

    Totally agree Trill..

I would never get it put it again. I loved it for a month or 2 and then BANG hormones, nasty nasty.. I was not myself.. it was horrific when DH told me later what i was like...

DH and the snip is my way to go.. I am going to let my body for ONCE do what it should do naturally..

    Hey didispunk,

Desperately trying to get back to Canada as well! This country isn't for me...it's been four years though...

Loads of side effects with this thing--but not listed in the brochure--can't wait to get it out and let my body get back to normal as well. Over three years of pregnant, breastfeeding, miscarriages, pregnant again, breastfeeding...I need a break! And maybe the men can think about birth control for once. Hubby still wants another baby--"to try for a boy"--but I said only if we move back to Canada...!!!

thanks Trill for that, my dr seemed to stress that because its at the sight, i shouldn't have too many side effects like the pilll....

    Hi
The Mirena was supposed to lighten my AF and lessen my pain from Endo, but instead it has given me AF ever since I got it put in with a heavy bleed at AF time and pain 24/7.

It was thought to reduce endo in the body cavity. I needed it to help me get rid of my endo, but it seems that I will have to do that with surgery. But before surgery I need to loose weight. I also have other health conditions to take into consideration to have the opp. I am starting to think that a total hysterectomy may be the best for me after this night mare.

Some women this is good for (lucky them) but for me it hasn't been nice.

    Take care
    Chris

    widdly,

Obviously I would say don't do it, but of course it's up to you and you may have no side effects at all! Just think about the side effects and if you are willing to live with them--if I read about potential hair loss, I wouldn't have got this stupid thing! Or the weight gain--it's been terrible. Ten days till I get it out...

    Hi
Every women will have a different experiance with any medication. All you can do is try it and if it is not for you, it can be easily removed. It all comes down to the fact it is your choice. You might be lucky and find that it is good for you.

I know that progesterone is not good for me but was told that it is minimal dose and that it is supposed to stay local.

Good luck with what ever you choose.
    Take care
    Chris

thanks guys. I am not going to have it inserted, I just think puting a peice of plastic into one of my organs, which is filled with synthetic hormone, is just asking for trouble.

Im gonna work on my diet and exercise and also see a friend who is a natropath, see if I can balance my hormones the matural way. As for contraception....abstinence is working well atm LOL I might end up getting a maybe baby to help with avoiding DTD when ovulating.

And had the IUD removed this morning--doc says 48 hours until the hormone is out of my system, so hopefully will see some improvements in my mood before long. And hopefully I can lose some of this weight!

As for contraception, I think I will let hubby worry about it for once! I need a break! Here's hoping there aren't any accidents--not yet anyway--but if there is, we are on the first plane back to Canada--cannot have any baby alone in this country!

    Good luck to everyone else...
