DD is 7 months old and we've been doing BLS for about 6 weeks. She has lunch with me (and sometimes with DH or someone else too). I usually give her cooked veggies and/or fruit, plus a bit of bread or breadlike thing. Sometimes she's had meat, but not often, yet.
The last couple of days she doesn't want her veggies. I've given her carrot, sweet potato, beans and broccoli on her plate and she's been really uninterested in anything. She was also uninterested (or didn't like the taste of) the cheese that I gave her (first time for cheese). The only thing she ate with enthusiasm was the bit of a sao biscuit that I gave her at the end.
Now, I usually wait until she's finished with veggies and meat before offering her bread, because the bready stuff is her favourite and I want her to try other things. Seems like a sensible approach to me. But I'm a bit worried to have given her bread without her having eaten anything else. Isn't that sending a wrong message? Is it normal for them to go off things that they have previously enjoyed? Should I continue offering the usual veggies? What if she keeps it up for a week or two?
Any suggestions?
Also, how much water should I offer her and how should I do it? I've given her water in a sippy cup, the last few days, since we got back to Australia where it's warm. But she doesn't know how to work the cup herself - I have to hold it up for her. So she's not really controlling how much she has, and I don't know how much to give her. I hold it up and let her suck the end until she makes a face, then I stop, but I don't know if this is enough water or not.
You could try pureeing some vegetables into a spread to put on toast, I do that with lunch a lot. For example, today she had watermelon, rock melon and some roast pumpkin and lentils spread on toast.
I would just keep offering the water as you are and she will soon get how to do it herself. Have you tried a few different sippy cups? If she is breastfed sometimes the straw like tops can be good (that is what we use) with handles on the side so it is easy to hold. Also don't fill it too much or it can become too heavy for them to maneuver.
Yes, mine did go off and on with foods in the early days. I wouldn't worry. Do you sit down and eat the same thing as you are offering her? I find that kids are always more interested in eating the same thing. You don't have to puree your serving... she will know from the smell that' it's the same thing. I LOVE a bowl of steamed vegies with butter for dinner... and my kids have picked up on that and that love it too!
