Help! Night nappies causing sores :(

We inherited some old school Tots Bots fitted terry nappies and PUL covers from a friend which we've been using for DD at night since they're SUPER absorbant (tho but ugly!). So absorbant that since DD has been sleeping well from about 8pm to 6am (with feed breaks but we practically do those in our sleep so they don't count) we haven't bothered getting up to change her til morning as once she's up she's wide awake and a really crap napper during the day.
But recently DD got a sore spot where the nappy and cover meet at the back of her leg and it only seems to be getting worse despite regular nappy balm and organic/natural healing creams. A couple of nights in sposies and it heals but I don't want to use them at night (don't last the distance and we end up waking her up by changing her anyway).
I'm considering changing her at her 5am feed and risking her being bright eyed and bushy tailed - meaning a tired mummy and cranky baby in the arvo but avoiding a nasty rash
What would you do? Any other suggestions?????

change covers hon. PUL doesnt allow 'that' area to breath at night at all so it leaves a huge hot wet nappy consealed. quiet obviously its a hot spot were the blister has formed..poor little honey

get your hands on some woolies or fleecie covers and see how you you

koru, I was just coming on to say the same thing as maz

I would change from the PUL cover to a wool one - wool is so much more breathable than PUL. We have a couple of Loveybums covers that E wears at night and they are ace but not real cheap, if you want to save some $$$ try a Baby Beehinds. They are really reasonably priced and I used them for DD1 and they were great.

    Good luck!

Thanks guys - I was considering getting wool covers in autumn by which time DD will have outgrown the Tots Bots but not sure what to put on the inside yet (flat terries or some sort of bamboo?)> Won't the wool be too hot in summer? Will 2 wool covers be enough?

Wool (or fleece) seems like it will be hot but because it allows moisture to evaporate it can be cooler. Like a natural evaporative cooling system

koru, wool isn't as hot as PUL because of its "breathability". You get more evaporation of moisture from the nappy and the cover and therefore it is actually cooler. I know E is much happier in wool overnight than PUL and so was DD1 - she was a toddler too when we were using it and would have said if she didn't like it! LOL

2 wool covers will be plenty. You don't need to wash them every day like PUL, just give them an air between wears and only wash if they get dirty or start to smell. You'll also have to lanolise them, I just do that when they start to not repel moisture anymore or when I'm washing them.

Hope Orla's sore clears up for you soon, poor little one

get some baby beehind bamboo fitteds when you can. They make excellent night nappies and are made entirely from bamboo fleece. Charmlea is a MPM on here that is a BBH rep so give her a bell.

Fleece covers and be cheaper to buy then wool and work jsut as well. There is no need to lanolise the, you can air them out between changes, and wash them if your normal nappy wash...PLUS they dry really quickly. You might want to look into them more

Looks like I'd better get me some new covers
Reckon i'll try one of each and see which suits us best . Any recommendations on brands of fleecy? I know where I can get a wool one locally.
