Runny Poo's - No Milk?

Ok, timeline
10 days ago, fly back from melb, had been in contact with other small kids
8 days ago, develop clear snotty, runny nose
7 days ago, some explosive nappies (3) He gives me the snotty nose which is just that - lots of snot but I am also fine.
6 days ago, red bum from poos (approx 4-5 runny(not water though,just squirty)poos per day)
5 days ago , reeeeeaally sore red bum,2-3 runny nappies
4 days ago, red bum gone, 2 slightly more formed poos (sloppy) but HUGE ans smelly
3+2+1 days ago, 2 big sloppy smelly poos per day.
So today..
It was suggested to me to take him off dairy for 24 hrs, to let his gut settle. So we made up cereal with fruit and water (mashed banana, avo, fruit ect), replaced his formula with warm water and have fed him lots, but nothing with dairy in it, he has had toast, jelly, mashed veggies. He has coped with this no problems.
Am I doing him any harm?, he had a formula drink at 6 am, but none since (so he has only missed 2 bottles) and he has drunk approx 300ml warm water during today and has been offered his sippy cup which he can drink himself and he is not thirsty.
Normally he isa once a day log kind of poo-er and the snotty nose has come and gone but remained clear the whole time and no temp.
He has been on baby pro biotics for 5 days now
I am happy to continue with this regime until tomorrow am, but just checking this is ok for him. FWIW, no poos since an explosion after his formula this morn.
He is a perfectly healthy 8.5month old.

OH, also, nothing has changed in his diet for the last 2.5mths and he has shown no signs of intolllerances to anything and dad and myself have no probs

Could he be teething? My DS used to have yucky poos and a very red bum when he teethed, that was the only way I knew he was teething the actual teeth didnt seem to bother him.
I am not sure about avoiding dairy or not, hopefully someone who knows more will pop in.

I dont think so, he has 8 teeth and has never has it for this long before.
Oh well, he is all tucked up in bed now.
Am sure he will be fine. Thanks anyway
