DS started vomiting every half hour or so on new years day at about 6pm, went on like that till about 10pm, he slept fine, yesterday had about half a banana for b/fast but then refused all food except boobie. was quite pale but still his usual self, drinking lots of water too.
Last night was restless, writhing in his sleep as if he was in pain, crying in his sleep etc, he woke me at 1am, I changed an extremely sloppy nappy. he ent back to sleep.
woke me at 5am, changed another extremely sloppy nappy, and have been changing him every 15mins to half an hour now.
How long can/will/should this go on for? he is gasping and crying with pain every time he poos, poor little mite.
when is it advisable to go to hospital with something like this? he is still having boobie and will still drink water, I am just so worried ATM, this is the first time he has ever had Gastro .Please help!
Oooh, poor little one
As long as he is drinking, he will be fine. You might want to use a barrier cream to protect his bottom from so much poo and wiping - he might get a bit red. The only thing you can do for him (besides lots of cuddles!) is keep up his fluids and don't offer any fibrous foods. Once he gets back onto food, just offer white starchy things (banana is a good one, white bread, noodles, rice, dry crackers etc).
If he seems really lethargic and non-responsive, that's when you need to get him some medical help.
The last gastro bug we had here lasted for over a week... but it wasn't as severe as what you're describing. Hopefully this bout will be over in 24 hours - I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.
Only other thing to remember with gastro is to clean, clean, clean. If Natty ever spews I bring out the anti-bac wipes and clean EVERYTHING that she touches. Probably a little bit OC, but gastro germies spread through their poo and spew, so it's important to get rid of all the traces.
Hope he is improving...Just wanted to say if you are in doubt at all don't hestitate to go to GP or emergency...rather be over paranoid...little ones can dehydrate quite quickly especially with all that poo and vomit...but as long as he is having wet nappies I think you should be fine....hopefully it is only a 24 hour thing...
I took ds to emergency once for dehydration and they said if I can get 10mls into him every 10mins he'd be fine. As long as he's still drinking fluids I think he'll be ok, but definitely don't hesitate to take him down or call Health Direct if your gut instinct tells you otherwise! I was also told by my gp that's it's ok to mix 1 part lemonade with 2 parts water to get some sugar for energy back into him. Especially if the gastro is knocking his energy levels this might just perk him up enough to eat something.
Ds has had gastro anywhere from 2-6 days. It's not a nice thing to go through. We usually spend a lot of time on the couch having cuddles and watching his favourite shows.
I agree, 10mls every 10 minutes (or 60mls every hour) is a good goal. If you're breastfeeding, you need to aim for 6-8 wet nappies in 24 hours, or a wet nappy every 3-4 hours. If he's not meeting those goals, then he may be dehydrating, and he will need to be assessed, either by your GP or by your local hospital.
Something better than watered down lemonade is gastrolyte - it contains a balanced sugar-salt solution that helps little ones stay hydrated.
Good luck - hope the poos have slowed down by now!
I hope your little one is feeling better, sounds like he is over the worst of it, remember to keep vigilant with hand washing and maybe some anti bacterial airsprays as well you don't need anyone else to get sick, especially YOU!!!
