Personally I wouldn't want to live there.

Out western suburbs I would pick:

    Essendon
    Seddon
    Yarraville
    Williamstown
    Newport
    Point cook
    Mannor lakes
    Whyndam vale

    to name a few

Maidstone once was a very working-class area but in the last few years has had big changes because it was an affordable place to buy a home and is still very close to the city. I'm in Footscray which I love but would happily live in Maidstone (although I'd probably prefer Yarraville or Seddon) - it's close to services, schools, transport, 15 minute drive to the city. It's an area with lots of new housing, which attracts families to the area. There may not be the cafe and restaurant culture of Yarraville/Williamstown/Seddon but then it's nowhere near as expensive as those spots (looking at $400 p/w to rent a 2bdr orange brick flat in Yarraville!!!)...it really depends what you're after?
