    DSD's School Report/VCE

DSD is not exactly covering herself in glory at the moment.

Now OBVIOUSLY, we should be asking the school about this but as they're on hols at the moment, we can't so that's why I'm asking the opinions of the experienced BB mums.

After hiding her school report, we finally got hold of it the other day and it's appalling.

She's in Year 10 and did a VCE subject early and got a C+. Obviously that's not appalling.

But, she failed all other subjects (because she didn't complete assignments) except for physical education and catering.

So she hasn't used this year to develop good study habits at all. I have given her the "you have to give yourself a set time each evening to do your homework" talk so many times, it's not funny.

Anyhow, my real question is - surely if she's getting grades this bad when she starts doing her VCE then the school won't allow her to complete it right?

    What's your teenager's school policy?

DSD goes to a pretty good state school with very good VCE scores so I can't see them wanting their averages brought down.

If their report is bad, do they get the option to repeat Year 11?

There appears to be no problem with her entering Year 11, I am just dubious they would let her enter Year 12 if her grades for Units 1 & 2 VCE are bad.

But I'm from the UK, so I don't fully understand the VCE thing.

with VCE u have to pass 16 units and at our school we did 22 altogether so 6 subjects in yr 11 and 5 in year 12
im sorry to say a pass is a pass in VCE and the only reason to try hard is if ur working for a good ENTER score
if u have anymore questions just ask HTH

so JwithJ - if you don't pass the units in Year 11, presumably you would have to repeat them before doing Year 12?

if the year 12 subjects have a pre-requisite of a pass in the year 11 subject, then no, she won't be able to proceed.

most subjects (well, when i did it) carried through from year 11 to year 12 (so unit 1-4 of same subject) and if you didn't pass units 1 and 2 you couldn't do 3 and 4

i know my bro ended up repeating year 11 cos he couldn't do his year 12 subjects after slacking off

yep but coz of less subjects in yr 12 she would have a choice to drop one of her yr 11 subject presumably the one shes doing the worst in
bad thing is that even if they do bad they can still pass as long as they hand in every bit of work and get a pass on everything and some teachers might say to her i'll pass u if u hand in all the work even if the work isnt passable not sure how it works at her school but thts how it worked at mine
i know in yr 12 its only 40% to pass anything in yr 11 all that matters is pass or fail thats all VCE schools

    Thanks guys.

So I checked out the VCE info on the school's website and it basically says that you'll be de-enrolled if you miss too many classes and that you have to pass Units 1 and 2 before doing Units 3 and 4.

I think this one said that if you have six unexplained absences in one subject over the year, then you're de-enrolled from that subject.

When school starts again, have a meeting with the Yr11 Co ordinator and check things out.

I'd request a meeting with the Year co-ordinator when the teachers return to school... Phone up when the reception have started again as there will be lots of people wanting times...
