I used to like swimming but I can only do breast stroke which my physio has banned me from doing because it opens my legs and that = bad for dodgy pelvis.
I can't do freestyle, I'll drown.
So I'm thinking of doing walking/running in the pool instead. But how d'you do it? D'you just go in the slow lane and the swimmers go around you or do pools often have a dedicated lane for this these days?
There is a recreation lane set aside at the lap pool I go to. There seem to be heaps of people walking there. Some rehab also after knee recons perhaps as they clearly have set exercises and some have leg weights. It may be worth seeing if someone can recommend some exercises too (?physio). Can you kick at all? I warm up/down with a kickboard just gently kicking. Good luck - it is frustrating when you can't exercise as you want.
FWIW - I went to do laps last week - no point going when it is hot as they opened everything up for fun. (gee that sounds grumpy, lol)
Sorry Ive only just seen this Fiona. I have had to do lots of walking in the pool and rehab for my back and hip. I also use the rec lane to do these activities. I also agree about finding out about specific exercise to aid rehab for you. You could do this by chatting with your physio, or enquiring with your physio clinic to see if they have hydrotherapy classes - these are done in a warmer pool (the colder the pool the harder it is on your muscles because they contract in the cold). You could also see a personal trainer who is experienced in both water and injuries. I know that aquaarena in Doncaster has a program for this.
A lot of my exercises were done with a good ol' fashioned pool noodle.
Our local pool has a dedicated walking lane and it's in 1m deep water, and everyone just walks laps at their own speed.
Just this week I joined a shallow/deep water walking/running class and it was terrific. Pregnancy based but I've also seen just general ones advertised. This was at another pool, but they just closed off 2 lanes for us and we went back and forth from deep end to shallow, doing a variety of moves using noodles and foam dumbells. It was an hour long but went really quickly, very gentle but my body did get a decent workout. Good luck with finding what works for you!
