I know its a little while off but i turn 21 in march (end of) and i'm having a birthday party. (i'll be about 27wks UTD by then) and im trying to think of a theme for it. my sisters 21st (two years ago) was co(ktail dresse. and well, i dont want to go down that path! the other thing is i'll have kids (aged 3months -14 years) there, so i'd like a theme that they can join in with as well (be it the same as the adults or different i dont mind) i thought about miss congeniality or alike becuase thats me to a tee - but DH was a little about that when i suggested it. but he couldn't come up with any thing else!
we're having it at the local fishing club and we'll have to decorate it...ALOT! its really plane and boring, now depending on the theme how would we do this? seeing as there will be lots of little ones (inc my DS!) i dont want to have any safety issues. so the idea of lots of little things on the table isnt really a good one (mums suggestion) soo...what kind of things could i "jazz" the place up with?
the other thing that i'm thinking of (and i am yet to bring it up with DH) is the idea that on the cake table or the bar i have a photo of my Pa (Grand father) who passed 8 years ago as well as my Uncle who passed nine years ago. with a beer next to the photo of my uncle - inside of a bombers (yep, he followed the footy until the end) stubby holder and with my pa maybe his soldering iron i found not long before he passed or a flower that my gran often keeps with a photo of him... but would it seem tacky KWIM? the reson for this is that i'm the last of the 'grand kids' to turn 21, and from what i know i'll also be getting the last of the 21st wooden keys my pa made - which my father will have finished off ( ) and i want to honer them in some way - as both tuched my life- and my uncle in particular i feel opened up my mind to the spiritual world with his passing.
the last thing is chances are i'll be making my own cake. i'f fairly sure it'll be a chocolate cake with chocolate iceing on it BUT i need to work out what kind of gluten free cake i can make - thats for 6 people all up. would i be better making mini cakes (cupcakes almost) for the 6 people who cant have gluten OR make a smaller cake for them and just cut it up before going and storeing it away from the 'normal' cake/food?
DD2 a couple of years ago had a pirate theme for her 21st and nearly everyone dressed up. We had all ages there. They were also asked to bring a plate of pirate food which some of the younger ones had fun inventing.
For the cake I would just make a small one for those people and let them know there is a gluten free cake available. Then have yours how you want it.
What about use your birth year as the theme - so let me count....1989? Am I right?

Maybe a come as your fave 80's popstar or something? Or come dressed as a letter of the alphabet (as in Police officer, post man / lady, um, pros***ute , pregnant lady , priest etc)...
What about favourite disney character?? Buzz, Woody, Mikey and Sully from Monsters Inc., all the disney princess', 7 dwarfs......the list could go on and the costumes are fairly easy to make hire or put together for any of the characers.
What about a 'charity' type event - like if you are really passionate about Breast Cancer for instance, have everyone dress in pink (perhaps) and have money given to the charity in lieu of a gift. You may need to speak to the specific charity and find out the best way this could happen - so your guests are assured the money goes to the charity (some ppl are just like that ) - just an idea that popped into my head....I understand its not everyones cup of tea, but it may work for you .
