buying wedding dress on the internet..am i being ripped off?

I found a dress i really want to buy, i cant afford to spend thousands on one and was so happy to find one on a site called stylish bridal (aka wedding dress discount).

I tried to order the dress via thier web site which was secure (little lock image in top corner) but it wouldnt work, so i email the sales guy i have been communicating with along the way and he said i could send him my details...including credit card number etc, via email to him and he would put the order through.

This just screams 'con' to me, i dont want to get ripped off. Has anyone heard of this company or knows of a better way i can pay...would paypal be better?

No way DO NOT ever email anyone your credit card details.

Pay pal at least you can dispute but I would still be very very careful!!!!

Good idea to be wary! I'd never send my CC via email and I'm sure my bank has actually sent me emails saying not to do so.

Ask them if you can pay via paypal for sure!

    No, I wouldnt either!

My girlfriend got her dress from tjformal which is also a US site, and she had no problems with them. She found the one she wanted in a store here, but ordered in from the states to save on the cost.

I would even jump on some Wedding Forums (if you havent already) and do a search on them to see what else you can find out.

You can find similar designs on ebay however it can go either way...I know a couple of ppl who got excellent dresses however I did it and paid 250 for the most hideous dress ever. I used it as a haloween costume last year...good luck

Yes I know someone who ordered their bridesmaid dresses through tjformal with no probs also.

You need to be really careful ordering internationally in regard to sizing as virtutally nowhere will allow you to exchange.

From memory from my time on wedding forums, Landy Bridal was often recommended. Don't know if they still are.

As pp mentioned, I wouldn't email CC details

Gee I would be wary of someone who asked you to email them - I don't know what recourse you would have through your cc company if something did go wrong and you could end up losing out. Anther thing to be wary of is the sizing. If you are not a stock standard body shape, you could end up spending way more than what you paid for the dress in alterations. When I was having my girls flowergirls dresses made, I commented to the dressmaker that I found some gorgeous ones in the US for not much money, but didn't want to risk needing them resized etc and she pointed to a wedding dress she had hanging up and said that it was brought on ebay and the cost of alterations was already well over $300 because she charges her time at $25 per hour

that sounds sus to me... yeah i bougth a custom made wedding gown from ebay but paid via paypal.

as a tip pay the extra and get measured by a seamstress.... i had my dress altered out of fear that they would make it to small so had the zip taken out and replaced with laces.

Thanks for all the replies, i emailed him and he totally agreed that it must have sounded sus! I can pay by paypal no problem.
Im going to hit the wedding forums again and ask around some more, get some opinions of the site. I think its legit, but want to be 100% sure before i part with my cash!!
