How long should one go before you worry? My kids have never really had anything but colds and small temps after immunisations, but DD has been quite warm for nearly 24 hours now. Her temp at 3am was 39 so we gave her panadol to try and make her a bit more comfortable and put her in a cooler room, toay shes in the coolest room of the house, and just roaming in a nappy.
She's still warm. She's eating and drinking, I'm offering fluids much more regularly, she's still crawling around and trying to walk (although not as quickly as normal, and she just looks so tired)etc, but she's just still pretty hot.
There are no spots or rashes obvious on her body at all and I can't see anything else.
Oh, she's got the runs pretty badly along with the temp.
Is there any reason to worry?
if she is still eating and drinking and playing I wouldn't be too concerned
I would keep and eye on her and her temp and keep up the panadol and if she doesn't start to improve I's take her to the doctors
It could be something as simple as a bug or gastro but its better safe than sorry. I know its aweful to see ur child unwell. I hope she improves for u
If her temp isn't coming down with the panadol then she should see a Dr.
Could be just a tummy bug but if she has the runs then the panadol could be going straight through her and that's why her temp isn't coming down
A good Dr will never growl at a Mum being over cautious when their kids are sick. A parent knows their child better than a Dr.
fever on it's own is nothing to be alarmed about. It is the body's natural way of fighting things. I would get a fever checked if after 48 hours it was unchanged. However, if the child stopped drinking or producing wet nappies or showed signs of lethargy (above normal "I'm sick so I'm tired" lethargy) or showed signs of dehydration, I would get them looked at sooner.
Sounds like you're doing all the right things. You could also try tepid washes (not cold water but not warm). Just keep in mind you don't want to cool your child down too much as this will cause them to shiver which actually increases temperature.
FWIW - my DD recently experienced something similar. She was spiking up to 39.9 temps, stopped eating and drinking, was HOT to touch, and just wanted to lay on the couch all day. It took her two days to pick up and another 2 to get back to normal altogether (so 4 days total). We originally thought she had a UTI as she was complaining of pain to bladder region but the specimen came back clear.
