DD is 11months now, and for breakky i have always given her the farex muesli or any of the baby cereal with the iron enriched added in and i always add in fruit together with it, but i have always boiled the fruit, like pear , apple , peach apricot, i boil it until it becomes soft and give it a wizz in the processor and put it in the fridge and use it within 1-2 days. Does this destroy all the vitamins? Any suggestions other than the supermarket iron enriched baby muesli? i have heard that the normal muesli or cereal that we have is not as good as the baby ones for their little tummy.
I've not given DD baby cereal, just normal adult stuff and I'm not sure about the vitamin thing sorry?
I give DD porridge, or fruit, or toast, or weetbix for breakfast. From 6 months on they can eat family foods so if you want you can just give her what you're having if it's suitable (saves a lot of time anyway, LOL).
I think by 11months, I was giving DD normal porridge or weetbix for breakfast. Definately by 12months, they apparently should be eating family foods, like Heaven said. Not sure about cooking and storing the fruits, and the nutrients. Could you give DD fresh fruit now? It was only about 6months ago that DD was 11months old, and yet I'm struggling to remember what she was capable of chewing/eating!
There's no real right or wrong, just whatever works for you guys.
Probably fresh fruit is better - there are lots of fruits that are easy to eat raw (you might just need to peel it for her). Pear, watermelon, melon, stone fuits, banana of course. Depending on how many teeth she has, she might even manage apples, pineapple and other things.
I don't think those baby cereals are anything special really - they just add (often unnecessary) iron etc and jack up the price. We would use rice porridge (or you can just overcook regular rice). It's cheaper and no additives.
From what I've always read or been told steaming or microwaving is the best way to retain the nutrients in foods. I think as long as you are only boiling the fruit with enough water to just cover the fruit and only for long enough to assist it to become mushy (ie not for more than 5 or so mins) then it should be ok.
I believe that by 11 months babies can have wheat (unless there is a history of allergies) so you could try normal cereals. Just watch the salt and sugar content. Wheat biscuits etc are a good choice.
