I managed to set a stain in my pale grey carpet using bicarb so I personally wouldn't do it. Get a professional carpet cleaner in.

if its dirt sprinkle the bicarb on and get some vinger in a spray bottle and spray it over the top - leave it for about 10-15mins and kind of rub it a little and if need be add more bicarb/vinger and vac off we've used it on our carpet a fair bit - and they're a pinkish color. it also helps for vomit stains and cat chunder!

I used bicarb and water to get red straight cordial out of beige carpet.
The main issue i had was that it worked too well - it didnt take colour out but the spots are now so clean they are very obvious in the rest of the carpet.
