To all of you lovely VBACers here on BB I just wanted to find out what type of care you chose and where you had your VBAC. Was it at Home? Birth centre? Public or private Hospital?
I planed a homebirth and transferred to a second c/sec ... the difference the second time was that I wasn't drugged to the eyeballs and I genuinely needed the surgery, it wasn't a failure to wait, cascade of interventions special like my first birth way. My last birth was a vba2c, I went into labour at 28w though, so had no choice but to once again go to hospital. I arrived at 10cm dilated and the hospital still tried to give me surgery. I pushed the baby out within 20mins - faster than they could have had me in theatre.
I would choose home all the way. The chances of a vbac at home are far higher than in hospital from what I read of vbac, hospitals do many things that are against WHO guidelines for vbac, and actually cause further surgery in many cases. Not that it's impossible to do it in a hospital, but it's more likely to happen at home with an IM
I suggest speaking to an IM, you can interview a couple of them, and then making your choice
I had mine at a private hospital through a VBAC friendly OB. Same hospital I had DS at and it was fantastic. Was a bit apprehensive and uninformed about doing the homebirth thing so chose the private hospital. The public hospital here has a higher success rate for VBAC but I didn't get a good feel from it, so just went with what I knew and put my case forward, worked with the system so to speak. The best thing I did though was to labour at home for as long as possible - I got there when I was 7cm and going into transition. Less time for them to try to intervene and 2 hours later DD was born.
I'm hoping I will soon be able to tell you that I had my vbac in a private hospital.
So while I can't actually answer your question, I do have a few thoughts about this. I was recently told that the most important factor in achieving a vbac is being determined that you want one. I know that statistically the best chance for a vbac is with a homebirth, but for various reasons this isn't the right choice for me. I also know that a doula or IM also increase your chance of success.
It seems to me that the most important factors are support and a lack of intervention. My husband is working very hard to be a great support person. I know the lack of intervention will be harder to achieve. I know that my OB will want to induce me at some point and once I'm at the hospital there will be offers of drugs, etc. I'm planning to labour at home as long as possible and I know it is up to me and DH to refuse intervention.
My VBA2C was in a private hospital with the same OB who performed both my CS. He was very supportive of my VBA2C which is the only reason I went private with him. I also hired an independant midwife to support me at home for as long as possible and then in hospital. And also just incase my OB changed his tune towards the end which often happens, but he never did because I was firm that I would not be booking another CS.
He also never placed any restrictions on me like monitoring and that sort of stuff. So there are a handfull of supportive OB's out there in the private system but they are rare.
I had my VBAC in a private hospital, seeing a VBAC friendly OB. I had a doula for support, laboured at home and arrived at hossy 1 hr before delivery.
This time I'm going public with a doula as I don't really feel that an OB is worth all the money. My VBac ob WAS great though and basically just came in to check me afterwards, left the bub with me and didn't haul him off for check ups - just checked him over the next day. I was very happy with him. Hope this birth goes just as well!
Another private hospital vbac here. I also had the same ob who performed my c/s with DS1. He suggested vbac for me at my 6 week check after DS1. Personally, I would be more stressed about birthing at home, but that is just me.
