My DH just rang me from work to tell me to read the back page of the paper today... if you drink Bonsoy (like I do) or have a thyroid condition (like I do) then maybe have a read:
Herald Sun 19 Feb 2010.
DR JAKE Landsberger has been with the Western Bulldogs for almost 25 years and has never come across anything as bizarre as Will Minson's poisoning.
"It is one of the most amazing things I have ever been involved in," Landsberger said.
"It was jaw-dropping. I can't ever remember anything like this in all my time with the Bulldogs."
Landsberger can't explain why he thought to test Minson's thyroid, which ultimately located the problem, when he didn't have any symptoms to justify it.
"There was nothing to see and all the tests were coming back normal," he said. "It was purely this gut feeling I had that I did a test called the thyroid function test.
"When the tests came back I almost feel off my chair. I was in a state of shock."
Minson's numbers were off the scales but the source of the problem wasn't found until a specialist with whom Landsberger had been in contact rang him to alert him to the Bonsoy soy milk recall.
"He rang me and asked whether Will had been drinking a product called Bonsoy milk and I told him I'd never heard of it but would find out," Landsberger said.
"Straight away I rang Will and said, `Have you heard of a product called Bonsoy milk?'.
"He said, `Bloody oath I have. I've been drinking gallons of it for the last three or four years'."
Minson had experienced extreme sweating and heart palpitations since Christmas, with normal activity such as a game of golf becoming almost impossible.
"In the previous couple of days he'd been playing golf and hadn't been able to putt because his hands were shaking so much," the Dogs doctor said.
"High amounts of iodine will destroy your thyroid gland and the thyroid basically controls your metabolism. Every part of your metabolism in the body is linked to your thyroid. Circulation, heart, blood pressure, pulse rate . . all controlled by the thyroid gland.
"I told Will it's like you are a car engine and you are stuck on accelerating. You have got a turbo boost and you can't apply the brakes. You're travelling at 100km/h in a 20km/h zone and you can't slow down."
Landsberger said Minson was a very lucky man.
"Thankfully he is a very fit elite athlete and his body has basically coped with this incredibly well and been able to hide it," he said.
"If he was Mr Average 25-year-old who was a bank teller sitting behind a desk all day, he would have been quite ill a lot earlier."
Fortunately i was only having a small amount daily with my morning cup of tea. I might try another brand... shame, it was great tasting! I wonder if it was just 1 batch
Thanks! That answers my question about batches. I haven't been drinking it for the past few months... partly because it hasn't been in stock where I shop... i guess that answers that question as well! Seems as if I should probably avoid it altogether with my Graves (hyperthyroid issue)... wonder if all soy milks have a high-ish iodine level?
yeah i'm with Bathsheba on this one...i heard that they do have a propensity towards higher levels of iodine, but that the bonsoy batch was just off the scales. such a shame for the company as it was seriously the yummiest soy out there (in my humble opinion of course lol!).
It is the best tasting brand by far so it is a real pity that this has occurred. We have stopped using it in our cafe and the baristas and customers alike are very upset!
We have been in touch with the suppliers and apparently a new batch is due in April... maybe...
Glad you found out Bath, recalls are not easy thing to discover!
I agree Bonsoy IS the best tasting soy drink by far... Such a shame... Maybe when I get back into remission again I'll allow myself a dash in my cuppa again... I never had it in my cereal etc so maybe no harm was done.
