My DS is 7.5 months old now. At around 4 months we stopped wrapping him because he had figured out how to roll on to his tummy in his cot and I was worried about him getting stuck. It took quite awhile to get him settling and sleeping well again, but after much perserverence we got there, and now he sleeps on his tummy all the time. Before we stopped wrapping he was sleeping through every night, and after a couple of weeks we got back to him sleeping through again.
Then when he got to 5 months he started teething. Ever since he hasn't started sleeping through again. Every now and then (maybe once a week on average) he will sleep through, but most nights he wakes up at least once but quite often it is two or three times. I had thought it was a combination of things, teething, development (learning to sit up and crawl) etc, but now I am beginning to wonder.
When he starts crying I go in and 9 times out of 10 he will either be on all fours or sitting up with his eyes still closed. I think when he comes to the end of a sleep cycle he stirs and is getting into this position without being properly awake, but then waking himself up as a result.
So I have been toying with the idea of wrapping him again, but am still a bit unsure. I know lots of people swear by wrapping older bubs, but I do still worry about him getting stuck on his tummy and have a few questions.
Do you wrap your older bub?
Do they sleep on their tummy? If they do, do you put them in the cot this way?
Do they get out of it?
Do they still wake through the night (or day - I find I have to settle DS back to sleep for most naps as well)?
Sam is 14 months old and is still wrapped sometimes. DH seems to have the knack of getting him to go to sleep without it, but not me.
Sam is also a tummy sleeper, I cuddle/rock him to sleep and then put him in the cot lying on his side and he usually rolls to his tummy straight away. We've never had an issue with Sam getting stuck, and he's usually out of the wrap by the time he wakes up anyway. Sam still wakes sometimes, if it's during the day a cuddle will usually get him back to sleep with no issues. At night, it's usually a drink of water and then sometimes in with us. DH deals with the nights as I'm on medication that makes me sleep so deeply that I often don't wake up when Sam cries.
I don't have any ACTUAL experience yet LOL but a book i'm reading by Sheyne Rowley which recommends wrapping older bubs involves wrapping, using extra tricky arm if necessary inside the wrap (not sure what these are!?), placing in something called a Safe T Sleep to stop rolling, and tucking in tightly by also wedging a rolled up towel right down the side of the mattress where you've tucked the sheet to create a feeling of snugness. Phew!
We wrapped our DS until he was about 9 months old. We wrapped him with 1 arm loose so that he could roll over if he wanted to but the wrap made him feel more secure and helped him sleep. He is now almost 4 and still doesn't sleep through though (either does DD). They both sleep through 2 or 3 times a week, otherwise we are up at least once every night. After tearing my hair out and feeling very hard done by sometimes I've come to the conclusion some bubs sleep well and some don't!
