Question Continue taking Motillium? Barb / MR

    Hi Barb/MR

Just need a little bit of advice as to whether I should continue taking Motillium or not? As you may know have been taking since very early days initially to build up my supply but my GP has been happy for me to continue on maintenance dose since approx mid December (in addition to being a GP she is also LC). Unfortunately she has had a family tragedy with her youngest sons been killed recently and isn't expected back in practice for at least another month. Would you suggest that I should continue taking the Motillium or not? I don't know that any of the other doctors in the practice will know or have much experience in dealing in lactation so don't think there is much point in asking them. However can probably just request new script from them.

Sam is 5 months tomorrow so will have been taking for just under 5 months now. Have also just started him on solids so want to make sure that milk supply isn't effected and he continues to get his nourishment from the milk.

What are your thoughts? Let me know if you need any info on his feeding pattern etc.

    Thanks NW3

    Hi NW3

You can keep taking the Motilium, if you like you can try weaning off it slowly, but if you find that your supply drops then bring it back up to the maintenace level.

I wouldn't play with it for a while especially as you are just moving towords introducing solids, the milk is definitely your DS's main source of nutrician, so I would continue on your maintenance dose for a while long before weaning.

I was on Motilium for over 12 months to feed DD, I was on quite a high dosage to maintain my supply, and each time I tried to wean my supply dropped, so for me it became a necessity.

It is safe to be taken, but this is the advice that I received from my OB, GP and a LC. If you GP/LC has already said that it is ok to continue then do so, they wouldn't say so if it wasn't safe/ok.

When you do wean, make it very slowly, and when you are only taking one tab per day, then go to every second day, then third day.

You have done an awesome job and sometimes we just need a little help to keep BF'ing
    Take care

    Hi,

There is no problem continuing to take the motilium. I've had a few busy weeks, but I noticed in another post you were saying that you baby was waking more often. This is a great sign, expecially when he is waking during the night. Feed him. Feeding should nearly always be the first settling strategy.
Well done on breastfeeding - you have some tough times, but you are doing great
