On Saturday morning when I woke up, I discover overnight I have grown a third nipple. On my left breast right next to the nipple still on the aerola is a huge lump. Interesting spot to have it. Anyway, I am trying to keep this breast well drained and are expressing when I can etc. However the lump is still there. It is painful to feed from this side too. DD2 isnt the best attacher. We were at the breastfeeding clinic when she was 3 weeks old to try and correct this. The clinic noted my breasts were a bluish colour and reckon I have nipple vasospasm. Anyway, we are trying our best.
I am also careful with checking my temp and monitoring to see if I am feeling unwell.
What else can I do? It does sound like a blocked duct right?
I am so not enjoying bf this time round. DD1 was a champion feeder and we went 13 months before she self weaned.
Each baby is so different....
Is the actual lump sore? When I had a blocked duct, the area around it (a whole quarter of my bb) was excruciatingly painful and it had a bit of redness to it. I managed to get it out with constant feeding and quite firm massaging (nearly passed out from the pain but didn't want an abscess or mastitis!!). If it progresses to mastitis you'll know pretty quickly because the pain is still there but all of a sudden you feel like absolute shi'te, really tired, achy and fluey. I hope it's not a blocked duct but if it is, it should be easy enough to get rid of with massage. Heat packs help too. Sorry that this bf journey isn't enjoyable at the moment. You know my stories so I understand the frustration. You are doing a great job.
hi jenjams, does the lump look like one of the lumps that is normally on the areola area? but filled with fluid? I ask as when DS was a few weeks old I had a swelling of one of the montgomery tubercles (i think thats what they are called???) on my left breast, on the areola, it looked like a big white head, I went to the doc who said that sometimes they can get filled up with milk and it gets trapped, then its basically like a big zit.
mine was still relatively small then, I kept putting hot flannels on it until it burst and released the tapped milk (or pus eww) then kept it as clean as possible. it was only as painful as a zit would be.
Dont know if its the same thing or not, but I hope you get it sorted quickly.
oh, it also really hurt to feed at the time as DS would aggravate it when attaching and latching and sucking as it was in that area.
Jenjams, I can't offer any help re the blocked duct, but for the vasospasm I started taking fish oil and evening primrose oil and it's really helped. It only comes back now if I sit in front of a fan or in a very cold room while feeding, whereas before I couldn't open the fridge or drink a cold drink without complete agony.
