Hi all,
As you can see I'm in Vietnam, where apparently a baby getting the hiccups is a disaster. I'm constantly being told to give the baby water. But she's on the small side so I'd prefer to only give her milk.
She's not bothered by the hiccups. She gets them a few times a day. I'm not worried by the hiccups but I'm getting so sick of people telling me to give her water.
Is there any sense in giving her water?
Hiccups is caused by the diaphragm. No one really knows what causes it and there is no known cure for it. For very severe cases muscle relaxant drugs have been used with some limited success. Drinking water may help in some cases but drinking milk or tea or juice would also help. Often distracting the person with the hiccups can cure it. This is the theroy behind scaring someone or getting them to stand on their head. Hiccups is harmless and unless it is bothering your daughter I would simply ignore it.
