I have had a similar thing (not quite as bad as you describe) recently and i mentioned it to my GP while i was there about other stuff and she said it looks a bit infected...dont know how.
I was given a script incase i needed it but have'nt bothered with it.
My tongue still looks a bit ordinary but its not hurting anymore.
Ther's a step up from Bonjela that you can get - SM33 or Medijel. Both are awesome for numbing the area - totally affects your ability to taste, but will at least let you get some food in.
I'm using both at the moment for a niggly wisdom tooth. The Medijel tastes like after dinner mint - it's delicious! Only then you can't taste much.
You might need to see a dr to get to the root of the problem...do you think it might be thrush-related? IN which case some swish-around-your mouth drops might be good, otherwise there are some good lozenges you can get on a script which are both antifungal and antibacterial. In the meantime you might get some relief trying to eat by using a mouthwash like difflam which will numb the pain so you can get some soft food down.
In the meantime, concentrate on soft cool energy-dense foods - scrambled eggs, smoothies, chuck a bit of extra skim milk powder or cheese in to boost the calorie content so you can eat less but not be so hungry.
