We think our DS might have thrush in his mouth. Does he need to go to the doctor or is there a treatment we can get from a chemist? Does anyone know what the treatment is? His CC has said he can't come in until it's gone.
I'm interested to know this too, I think our DS might have this as well, and it usually takes almost a week to get into our doctor! Hope someone knows!
DD#2 had oral thrush when she was only a couple of weeks old.
We were able to just get Nilstat from the chemist without seeing the doctor. If your DS is breastfeeding you will need to put the Nilstat on you too so you don't keep re-infecting each other!
The Nilstat is a terrible yellow that stains, so just be careful when using it!!
HTH
I second the Nilstat. I also found with DD that if she sometimes vomited when she had it so I gave it to her before a feed so she didn't bring the milk up. I have used it on DS now very recently and he has had no prob with it at all. I find it best to put drops on my (clean) finger and wipe it around his gums rather than syringe the 1ml down his throat as it needs to touch the thrush. And yes, your nipples too!
Just wanted to add that I went to the chemist tonight and got the Nilstat without seeing a doctor, thanks girls
Good idea to put it on my finger and rub it in, the bottle says to swirl it around in your mouth and I was thinking well how am I going to get a baby to do that!
Thanks everyone. We got a different one from the chemist - Daktarin - but it is probably the same thing and the chemist recommended it. They also recommended inner health plus - breaking a capsule & putting it in his milk. We did that last night and he still drank his milk. I'm hoping it'll work quickly.
Glad to hear you got him onto the inner health plus (probiotics), as this will replenish his stores of beneficial bacteria - the deficiency of which causes thrush to develop in the first place.
Thrush usually occurs in little ones if they have been exposed to antibiotics, either directly or indirectly via breastmilk - as the antibiotics cannot discriminate between good and bad bacteria - they effectively kill both. When good bacteria becomes depleted, the small amount of yeast that lives in our digestive system naturally is able to grow out of correct proportions and thats when thrush develops. Replacing the beneficial bacteria with a probiotic supplement is paramount to preventing thrush (yeast infections) of any kind.
Thanks for the info Jellybean. DS was on antibiotics for a flu type illness he had. I'm not breastfeeding anymore. I've been taking Inner health plus for years now as I have issues with vaginal thrush and it really helps so I'm confident it will help DS.
Poor DS has been sick with one thing or another since he started daycare about 7 weeks ago. Finally he seems healthy and happy but he now he has this. It's so hard to keep sending him when he keeps getting sick but we can't afford to keep him home. I'm not sure what we'll do if he needs to stay home soon. DH has been able to stay with him as he has been looking for work but he has an interview tomorrow so if he gets it, DS has to go somewhere or I'll have to call in sick I suppose.
Sorry for the OT vent. I didn't realise how much that had been affecting me but I'm sitting at my desk with tears in my eyes ATM. I hate sending him to daycare when he keeps getting sick. Normally he's so healthy. It seems so preventable - just by keeping him home, he wouldn't have had any of these issues.
Thanks for the . Its so hard to see him unhappy and sick. I know it happens and I should be glad he is generally healthy. At least thrush is just a yucky white mouth and doesn't effect him physically like the flu & gastro does. He's a different boy ATM compared to last week - so much happier.
