What are your opinions on different pocket nappies?
I am about to make the switch from disposables to cloth nappies. I have chosen to go for pocket nappies as i like having the option to choose my own boosters. Im just not sure which brand to go for. At first it was a toss up for me between green kids and mommys touch but the green kids are slightly smaller and my son is a big boy so i think i would get longer use out of the mommys touch. But now im wondering about pea pods. Im a single mum and price will pay a big part in what i choose. I know cheaper is generally lesser quality so id like to hear opinions from others before making my decision. So if anyone has used or heard anything about them please let me know!
Well i started with peapods. Lots of people hate them, but I never had a drama with them. And mine were the original version with hemp inserts - I believe they come with bamboo inserts now - much better.
The red ones do leak though so steer clear of them.
The Mommys Touch ones I don't have any experience with sorry.
I have BumG, Minilala, ecobubs and Happy Heiny's Pockets. To me the exxie bumG's aren't terribly different to the HHs except for the closure. BumGs use aplix and HH use velcro. The aplix works better and last longer.
There was a pocket kind on ebay a while ago that looked similar to the bumG/HH pockets that was pretty cheap.
If you sew getting a metre or two of bamboo fleece is a cheap and easy way to make stuffers. I made mine for DD and now DS is using them.
I haven't used Peapods but have heard only mostly negatives about them. Haven't heard of mommy's touch. Personally I couldn't get a good fit with Green Kids, but that's an individual thing.
We did use ecobubs pockets and happy babes pockets with no dramas. You don't mention how big your son is, but DD is 14kg and wouldn't get much more wear out of the happy babes if she was still in nappies, just due to size.
Might be best to get a few different ones to try until you work out what suits you best.
My son is approx 13kgs and the green kids do fit they are just pretty tight and im thinking he's going to be in them for another 12 months probably and i really dont think they will fit him for that long. I have heard a mixture of good and bad about pea pods, i just dont want to be the unlucky one who gets them and wastes my money because they dont work. The reason im looking at these brands in particular is because i work in a natural and organic baby store and these are the brands we stock and i would like to buy from my work preferrably. We also stock bum g but they come with a microfibre booster and i dont want to use microfibre, i would like a bamboo or organic cotton booster. ill look into the other brands you have both mentioned because as much as i would love to get them from work and support the business getting the right nappy is a bit more important! Thanks for your help!
If the material is important to you, maybe keep in mind that the booster won't be touching any skin - it's the liner of the pocket that will have all the contact with the bottom. Most are lined with synthetic fabric to draw moisture away. Though bamboo/hemp are definitely more absorbent than microfibre.
You might like to look into baby beehinds multifits as the ones I have seen seem to be on the larger side and might last you a longer time. I have only used sized bbh, but they are great value for money, in my opinion, and come with bamboo boosters.
its not the material touching his skin that concerns me, i just know that bamboo and cotton are extremely absorbent and hold liquid very well whereas microfibre absorbs alot of liquid but once its quite full it can tend to leak if pushed on. and im probably going to use a flushable liner anyway so there wont be as much contact with his skin. i have heard quite good things about bbh though. i sell bbh covers and they are very popular.do you know if they do a pocket nappy or only an aio? ive only seen the magicalls which are the aio...
The magicalls are a combined AIO/pocket - you can add boosters if you want or use them as is. I haven't used a multifit, but on the website (worth googling - all the info you need) they are described as pockets.
I often used a microfibre/bamboo combination with boosters with the MF closest to the bottom to absorb liquid quickly then pass it on to the bamboo booster behind to stop pressure leaks. This can help if your baby wees hard and fast by stopping it leaking at the legs before it has a chance to absorb. So even if a brand only comes with a MF booster, you can quite probably use another brand's bamboo booster to add to it if you buy them separately. Or many brands make boosters out of varying fabrics, but only initially supply a MF one IYKWIM?
I use the BBHs multifits, I think they're great especially as I never have to worry about DS growing out of the nappies! I've never had a leak with them and like how the pocket opening is inside the nappy rather than at the top.
Have you considered AI2s? They are very similar to pockets in that you can take them apart and many brands have options of boosters.
I used BumG pockets - they are one size - and found them excellent - thery were my work horse nappies and lasted perfectly the almost 2 years DD was in nappies.
Also used and loved Wrigglebumz (NZ site).
You can also make your own boosters or buy made ones - so go by the fit and make up of the nappy itself rather than the available inserts

I've done peapods and they were a good nappy to get started with. If you can make your own boosters then that will help because their main downfall is the booster wasn't enough. The fit is very generous and wide so good for chunkas but the rise isn't in proportion I found so we had butt crack issues.
Green kids are pretty good but not a fan of the velcro. Baby Kangas not a fan of the zip.
Not sure of any others that are sold without the booster to make it worthwhile for you to make your own boosters.
If it's price that's your issue then ATM there is a lot on sale so it's a good time to look around and *cough cough* check out ittibitti because they have a lot of seconds on clearance up ATM

I didn't like peapods at all - they were a terrible fit on my little one.
Just a thought - if they are stocked where you work, could you possibly get one of each of the brands that you are considering, and check them out for fit etc?
The itti specials that Raven has spoken of are definately a much better product than peapods IMO.
Ecobubs are great - you can buy just the shell so you can make your own boosters.
Cotton is NOT the greatest nappy fabric, it is not nearly as absorbent as hemp or bamboo.
