How to make a mickey mouse cake? Tips?

I'm thinking of making one but have no idea of where to start! My SIL has a Mickey baking tin, so that part is easy. However, she used gel icing and being black it was very messy. I'm having lots of kids at my sons birthday and am thinking fondant icing is a better idea. Any tips???? Please!!

Hi Jan. My SIL made mickey mouse not long again and the big tip to get the icing black is apparantely to start with chocolate icing or it will just go grey. I would go with just the good old butter icing too. Good luck - making birthday cakes are just so stressful. I'm in denial this year, LOL!!

I too would use butter icing.

Buttercream is a good icing to use, and to make it darker, or chocolate, just whip in some dark chocolate ganche, then your black food dye, it makes it taste great too!

If you aren't paritcularly fussy, I just made Mickey with buttercream and chocolate sprinkles.... the kids didn't notice.
